The foods of this world are poisons and its means are worn-out [and weak] ropes.
غِذاءُ الدُّنيا سِمامٌ، وأسْبابُها رِمامٌ۔

In being averse to this world there is attainment of prosperity.

In the vicissitudes of this world there are lessons to be learnt.
في تَصاريفِ الدُّنيا اِعْتِبارٌ۔

In this world there is action without reckoning.
فِي الدُّنيا عَمَلٌ، ولا حِسابٌ۔

This world is what the wretched desire.
فِي الدُّنْيا رَغْبَةُ الأشْقياءِ۔

قَدْ يَتَفاصَلُ المُتَواصِلانِ (المُتَفاصِلان)، ويَشَتُّ جَمْعُ الأليفَيْنِ۔

Indeed, that which was sweet of this world has become bitter, and that which was clean of it has...
قَدْ أمَرَّ مِنَ الدُّنيا ما كانَ حُلْواً، وكَدَرَ مِنْها ما كانَ صَفْواً۔

Indeed this world has embellished itself with its deception and it deceives [its inhabitants] with...
قَدْ تَزَيَّنَتِ الدُّنيا بِغُرُورِها، وغَرَّتْ بِزينَتِها۔

Little of this world takes away a lot of the Hereafter.
قَليلُ الدُّنيا يَذْهَبُ بِكَثيرِ الآخِرَةِ۔

The little of this world does not last and its abundance is not safe from calamities.
قَليلُ الدُّنيا لا يَدُومُ بَقائُهُ، وكَثيرُها لا يُؤْمَنُ بَلاؤُهُ۔

The mainstay of this world is by four [groups]: A scholar who acts on his knowledge, an ignorant...

Every gathering is [headed] towards dispersion.
كُلُّ جَمْع إلى شَتات۔

كُلُّ أرْباحِ الدُّنيا خُسْرانٌ۔

كُلُّ ماض فَكَأنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ۔

Every ease of this world is difficulty.
كُلُّ يَسارِ الدُّنيا إعْسارٌ۔

Every provision of this world is trivial for the contented and the chaste.
كُلُّ مُؤَنِ الدُّنيا خَفيفَةٌ علَى القانِعِ والعَفيفِ۔

Everything in this world [is such that it] seems greater when heard than when seen.
كُلُّ شَيء مِنَ الدُّنيا سَماعُهُ أعْظَمُ مِنْ عِيانِهِ۔

All the circumstances of this world change abruptly and its ownership is taken away and transferred...
كُلُّ أحوالِ الدُّنيا زَلْزالٌ، ومِلْكُها سَلَبٌ وانْتِقالٌ۔

Every moment of this world is [taking it] towards the end and every living thing in it is [moving]...
كُلُّ مُدَّة مِنَ الدُّنيا إلَى انْتِهاء، وَكُلُّ حَيّ فيها إلى مَمات وَفَناء۔

How many a person who relied upon this world has been made to suffer by it!
كَمْ مِنْ واثِق بِالدُّنيا قَدْفَجَعَتْهُ۔

How many a person who had confidence in this world has been struck down by it!
كَمْ مِنْ ذي طُمَأنِينَة إلَى الدُّنيا قَدْ صَرَعَتْهُ۔

How many a person who possesses grandeur has this world abased!
كَمْ ذي أُبَّهَة جَعَلَتْهُ الدُّنيا حَقيراً۔

How many a person who possesses high standing has this world returned to humility!
كَمْ ذي عِزَّة رَدَّتْهُ الدُّنيا ذَليلاً۔

That which has passed from this world suffices as an informer of what remains of this world.
كَفى مُخْبِراً عَمّا بَقِيَ مِنَ الدُّنيا ما مَضى مِنْها۔
