This World

This world is neither clean for any drinker [to drink from] nor is it loyal to any owner. الدُّنيا لا تَصْفُو لِشارِب، ولا تَفي لِصاحِب۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم This world is filled with tribulations [and] stricken with tragedies and calamities. الدُّنيا مَلِيئَةٌ بِالمَصائِبِ طارِقَةٌ بِالفَجايِعِ والنَّوائِبِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم This world is fleeting and perishing; [even] if it remains for you, you will not remain for it. الدُّنيا مُنْتَقِلَةٌ فانِيَةٌ، إنْ بَقِيَتْ لَكَ لَمْ تَبْقَ لَها۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم This world is smaller, more lowly and more insignificant than for one to keep grudges in [and... الدُّنيا أصْغَرُ وأحْقَرُ وأنْزَرُ مِنْ أنْ تُطاعَ فيهَا الأحْقادُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم This world is a prison for the believer, death is his gift and Paradise is his [permanent] abode. الدُّنيا سِجْنُ المُؤمِنِ، والمَوتُ تُحفَتُهُ، والجَنَّةُ مَأواهُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم This world is a Paradise for the disbeliever, death is his dispatcher and hell is his [permanent]... الدُّنيا جَنَّةُ الكافِرِ، والمَوْتُ مُشْخِصُهُ، والنّارُ مَثْواهُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم This world is a deal of the [one who has been] defrauded and human being is defrauded by it. الدُّنيا صَفْقَةُ مَغْبُون والإنْسانُ مَغْبُونٌ بِها۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم If this world unfolds, it opens up and when it disperses, it departs. الدُّنيا إنِ انْجَلَتْ اِنْجَلَتْ، وإذا جَلَتْ اِرْتَحَلَتْ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم This world takes turns, so be moderate in seeking it, and be patient until your turn comes to you. الدُّنيا دُوَلٌ فَأجْمِلْ في طَلَبِها، واصْطَبِرْ حتّى تَأتيَكَ دُولَتُكَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم This world is a present offering, [both] the virtuous and the vicious partake of it, but the... الدُّنيا عَرَضٌ حاضِرٌ،يَأكُلُ مِنْهُ البَرُّ والفاجِرُ، والآخِرَةُ دارُ حَقّ يَحْكُمُ فيها مَلِكٌ قادِرٌ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم This world is [like] the shadow of clouds and the dream that is seen while asleep. الدُّنيا ظِلُّ الغَمامِ، وحُلُمُ المَنامِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Reliance on this world, despite what is seen of its vicissitudes, is ignorance. الرُّكُونُ إلَى الدُّنيا مَعَ مايُعايَنُ مِنْ غَيْرِها جَهْلٌ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم This world is full of misfortunes.
