This World

One who relies on the deceptions of this world considers himself safe from its perils. مَنْ وَثِقَ بِغُرورِ الدُّنيا أمِنَ مَخُوفَهُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Whoever keeps back from seeking this world, it rises towards him. مَنْ قَعَدَ عَنْ طَلَبِ الدُّنيا قامَتْ إلَيهِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One who exceeds the limits in seeking this world dies a pauper. مَنْ أسْرَفَ في طَلَبِ الدُّنيا ماتَ فَقيراً۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Whoever turns away from this world, it comes to him belittled. مَنْ عَرَفَ عَنِ الدُّنيا أتَتْهُ صاغِرَةً۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One whose heart is attached to the love of this world catches three things from it: worry that... مَنْ لَهِجَ قَلْبُهُ بِحُبِّ ruins his Hereafter. مَنْ عَمَرَ دُنياهُ أفْسَدَ دينَهُ وأخْرَبَ أُخْراهُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One who loves [to acquire] the prestige of [both] this world and the Hereafter must detest prestige... مَنْ أحَبَّ رِفْعَةَ الدُّنيا والآخِرَةِ فَلْيَمْقُتْ فِي الدُّنيا الرِّفْعَةَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One who humbles himself for the children of this world takes off the garment of piety. مَنْ تَذَلَّلَ لاِبْناءِ الدُّنيا، تَعَرّى مِنْ لِباسِ التَّقوى۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One who fixes his gaze on the children of this world is blinded from the path of guidance. مَنْ قَصَّرَ نَظَرَهُ على أبْناءِ الدُّنيا، عَمِىَ عَنْ سَبيلِ الهُدى۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One who seeks something from this world is eluded by something greater from the Hereafter than what... مَنْ طَلَبَ مِنَ الدُّنيا شَيْئاً، فاتَهُ مِنَ الآخِرَةِ أكْثَرُ مِمّا طَلَبَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Whoever seeks [the profits of] this world through the work of the Hereafter, it takes him further... مَنْ طَلَبَ الدُّنيا بِعَمَلِ الآخِرَةِ،كانَ أبْعَدَ لَهُ مِمّا طَلَبَ۔ —Ghurar الدُّنيا لَمْ يَحْزَنْ على ما أصابَهُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One who recognizes the deceptions of this world will not be deceived by its impossible dreams. مَنْ عَرَفَ خِداعَ الدُّنيا لَمْ يَغْتَرَّ مِنْها بِمُحالاتِ الأحْلامِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One who triumphs in this world becomes troubled and one whom it eludes gets distressed. مَنْ ظَفِرَ بِالدُّنيا نَصِبَ، وَمَنْ فاتَتْهُ تَعِبَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One in whose eyes this world is grand and in whose heart its position is great, prefers it over... مَنْ عَظُمَتِ الدُّنيا في عَيْنِهِ، وكَبُرَ مَوْقِعُها في قَلْبِهِ، أثَرَها عَلَى اللّهِ، وانْقَطَعَ إلَيْها، وصارَ عبداً لَها۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One who becomes infatuated with this world, it fills his heart with a sadness which keeps... مَنِ اسْتَشْعَرَ الشَّغَفَ بِالدُّنيا، مَلأَتْ ضميرَهُ أشْجاناً لها رَقْصٌ عَلى سُوَيْداءِ قَلْبِهِ، هَمٌّ يَشْغَلُهُ، وغَمٌّ... —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One who relies on this world is indeed wretched and deprived. مَنِ اعْتَمَدَ علَى الدُّنيا فَهُوَ الشَّقيُّ المَحْرُومُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Whoever serves this world, it exploits him and whoever serves Allah, the Glorified, it (this world)... مَنْ خَدَمَ الدُّنيا اِسْتَخْدَمَتْهُ، ومَن ْ خَدَمَ
