Whoever disobeys his soul has awarded it.
مَنْ عَصى نَفْسَهُ وَصَلَها۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
One who is ignorant of his soul neglects it.
مَنْ جَهِلَ نَفْسَهُ أهْمَلَها۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Whoever considers himself to be great is humiliated.
مَنْ عَظَّمَ نَفْسَهُ حُقِّرَ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Whoever protects his soul [from evil] is revered.
مَنْ صانَ نَفْسَهُ وُقِّرَ۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Whoever controls his [carnal] soul, his affair [and status] is elevated.
مَنْ مَلَكَ نَفْسَهُ عَلا أمْرُهُ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Whoever is controlled by his [carnal] soul, his status is lowered.
مَنْ مَلَكَتْهُ نَفْسُهُ ذَلَّ قَدْرُهُ۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Whoever loathes his [carnal] soul is loved by Allah.
مَنْ مَقَتَ نَفْسَهُ أحَبَّهُ اللّهُ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Whoever abases his [carnal] soul is honoured by Allah.
مَنْ أهانَ نَفْسَهُ أكْرَمَهُ اللّهُ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Whoever knows himself knows his Lord.
مَنْ عَرَفَ نَفْسَهُ عَرَفَ رَبَّهُ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Whoever knows himself, his matter becomes sublime.
مَنْ عَرَفَ نَفْسَهُ جَلَّ أمْرُهُ۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
One who deceives himself cannot [sincerely] advise others.
مَنْ غَشَّ نَفْسَهُ لَمْ يَنْصَحْ غَيْرَهُ۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
One who governs [and trains] his soul has [truly] comprehended [the art of] administration.
مَنْ ساسَ نَفْسَهُ أدْرَكَ السِّياسَةَ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Whoever takes care of his soul with vigilance, remains safe.
مَنْ تَعاهَدَ نَفْسَهُ بِالحَذَرِ أمِنَ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
One who fears for his soul does not oppress others.
مَنْ أشْفَقَ عَلى نَفْسِهِ لَمْ يَظْلِمْ غَيْرَهُ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Whoever wrongs his [own] soul, no goodness is expected from him.
مَنْ أساءَ إلى نَفْسِهِ لَمْ يُتَوَقَّعْ مِنْهُ جَمِيلٌ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Whoever protects himself from asking others becomes exalted.
مَنْ صانَ نَفْسَهُ عَنِ المَسائِلِ جَلَّ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
One whose soul is noble, his affection [and compassion] increases.
مَنْ شَرُفَتْ نَفْسُهُ كَثُرَتْ عَواطِفُهُ۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
One who does not govern [and train] his own soul, destroys it.
مَنْ لَمْ يَسُسْ نَفْسَهُ أضاعَها۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Whoever is displeased with himself pleases his Lord.
مَنْ سَخِطَ عَلى نَفْسِهِ أرْضى رَبَّهُ۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Whoever is pleased with himself angers his Lord.
مَنْ رَضِيَ عَنْ نَفْسِهِ أسْخَطَ رَبَّهُ۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Whoever is able to gain control over his [carnal] self has attained the highest degree of strength.
مَنْ قَوِيَ عَلى نَفْسِهِ تَناهى فِي القُوَّةِ۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Whoever struggles with his soul in order to reform it, becomes felicitous.
مَنْ أجْهَدَ نَفْسَهُ في إصْلاحِها سَعِدَ۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Whoever neglects his soul [as it indulges] in its pleasures becomes wretched and distanced [from...
مَنْ أهْمَلَ نَفْسَهُ في لَذّاتِها شَقِيَ وبَعُدَ۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
One who does not struggle against his [carnal] soul in his young age does not become noble in is...
مَنْ لَمْ يُجْهِدْ نَفْسَهُ في صِغَرِهِ لَمْ يَنْبُلْ في كِبَرِهِ۔
