حاصِلُ الأمانِي، الأسَفُ (وَ ثَمرَتُهُ التَّلَفُ)۔

How close death is to hope!
ما أقْرَبَ الأجَلَ مِنَ الأمَلِ۔

How corrupting is hope for deeds!
ما أفْسَدَ الأمَلَ لِلْعَمَلِ۔

How severing is death for hope!
ما أقْطعَ الأجَلَ للأمَلِ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
No one lengthens his hopes except that he [also] curtails his actions.
ما أطالَ أحدٌ في الأمَلِ إلاّ قَصََّر فِي العَمَلِ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
What is the matter with you? You hope for that which you do not achieve, amass wealth which you do...
ما لَكُمْ تُؤَمِّلُونَ ما لاتُدْرِكُونَهُ، وتَجْمَعُونَ مالا تأكُلُونَهُ، وَتَبْنُونَ ما لا تَسْكُنُونَهُ؟۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
No one lengthens his hopes except that he forgets death and performs evil actions.
ماأطال اَحَدٌ الأمَلَ إلاَّ نَسيَ الأجَلَ، وأساءَ العَمَلَ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
The best assistance for action is curtailing hopes.
نِعْمَ عَوْنُ العَمَلِ قَصْرُ الأمَلِ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Let aspirations and ploys not deceive you, for this suffices as ineptness.
لا تَغُرَّنَّكَ الأمانيُّ والخُدَعُ، فَكفى بِذلِكَ خُرْقاً۔

No deception is more misleading than hope.
لاغارَّ أخْدَعُ مِنَ الأمَلِ۔

Nothing is more untrue than hope.
لاشَيْءَ أكْذَبُ مِنَ الأمَلِ۔

Aspirations are not loyal to those who rely on them.
لاتَفِى الأمانيُّ لِمَنْ عَوَّلَ عَلَيْها۔

The smallest of hopes leads to corruption of actions.
يَسيرُ الأمَلِ يُوجِبُ فَسادَ العَمَلِ۔

Be wary of [false] aspirations, for verily they are certain [causes of] deaths.
إحْذَرُوا الأمانيَّ، فَإنَّها مَنايا مُحَقَقَةٌ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Be cautious not to depend on hopes, for they are the wares of the unintelligent.
إيّاكَ والإتِّكالَ عَلَى المُنى، فَإنَّها مِنْ بَضائِعِ النَّوْكى۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
The most beneficial cure is abandoning [false] aspirations.
أنْفَعُ الدَّواءِ تَرْكُ المُنى۔

Aspirations are scattered [and dispersed].
الأمانيُّ أشتاتٌ۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Aspirations delude.
اَلأمانِىُّ تُُخْدَعُ۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
False aspiration is the trait of fools.
اَلأمانيُّ شَيْمَةُ الحَمْقاءِ۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Submission to hope corrupts [one’s] actions.
طاعةُ الأمَلِ، تُفْسِدُ العَمَلَ۔

It is when death comes that the failure of hopes becomes apparent.
عِنْدَ حُضُورِ الاجالِ تَظْهَرُ خَيْبَةُ الآمالِ۔

I wonder at the one who has no control over his death, how can he lengthen his hopes?.
عَجِبْتُ لِمَنْ لا يَمْلِكُ أجَلَهُ كَيفَ يُطيلُ أمَلَهُ۔

The end of hope is death.
غايةُ الأملِ اَلأجَلُ۔

The farthest thing is hope.
اَبْعَدُ شَىْء الأمَلُ۔
