There is no faith in the treacherous.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Treachery)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states: "لاإيمانَ لِغَدُور۔" This can be translated into English as:

There is no faith in the treacherous.

In this profound statement, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the essential quality of faith and its incompatibility with treachery.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. (faith) "إيمان" refers to the deep-rooted belief and conviction in the heart, accompanied by righteous actions. It encompasses the belief in the oneness of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), the prophethood of Muhammad (), and the acceptance of all the principles of Islam.

On the other hand, (treachery) "غَدُور" refers to deceitfulness, betrayal, and dishonesty. It is the act of breaking trust and betraying the confidence of others. Treachery is a grave sin that undermines the foundations of trust and destroys relationships.

To further emphasize the importance of trustworthiness and the absence of treachery in Islam, we find numerous verses in the Quran that highlight the significance of honesty, integrity, and loyalty. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:1):

O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.

This verse emphasizes the importance of fulfilling one's commitments and being trustworthy in all dealings.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Mumtahanah (60:8), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

This verse highlights the importance of treating others with fairness and justice, even those who may not share the same beliefs.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims that faith and treachery cannot coexist. Faith is built upon trust, sincerity, and honesty, while treachery erodes the very foundations of faith. A treacherous individual may outwardly profess faith, but their actions reveal their true nature.

The consequences of treachery are far-reaching. It not only damages relationships and erodes trust between individuals, but it also tarnishes the reputation of the entire Muslim community. When a person who claims to be a Muslim engages in treacherous behavior, it reflects poorly on the faith as a whole.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of embodying the qualities of trustworthiness, honesty, and loyalty in our daily lives. We should strive to be people of integrity, upholding our commitments and treating others with fairness and justice. By doing so, we strengthen our faith and contribute to the betterment of society.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)

There is no faith in the treacherous

serves as a powerful reminder of the incompatibility of faith and treachery. It emphasizes the importance of trustworthiness, honesty, and loyalty in Islam. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to be people of integrity and protect us from the pitfalls of treachery.
