— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intellect)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "العَقْلُ داعِى الفَهْمِ۔" This thought-provoking Hadith can be translated as,
The intellect is the herald of comprehension.
Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (aql) "عَقْلُ" in Arabic refers to the faculty of intellect and reason. It is the ability to think, understand, and comprehend. The intellect is a gift from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and is one of the distinguishing characteristics of human beings. It is through our intellect that we are able to discern between right and wrong, make rational decisions, and seek knowledge.
The word (da'i) "داعِى" comes from the root word (da'wah) "دعوة", which means to call or invite. In this context, it signifies that the intellect is a calling or a herald that invites us towards comprehension and understanding. It is through the intellect that we are able to perceive and grasp the deeper meanings and concepts.
The word (al-fahm) "الفَهْمِ" refers to comprehension and understanding. It is the ability to grasp the true essence and meaning of something. Through comprehension, we are able to connect the dots, analyze information, and gain insights.
The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of intellect and comprehension. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269),
He grants wisdom to whom He pleases; and he to whom wisdom is granted indeed receives a benefit overflowing.
This verse highlights that wisdom, which is closely related to intellect, is a divine gift that brings immense benefits to those who possess it.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:43), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And these examples We present to the people, but none will understand them except those of knowledge.
This verse emphasizes that true comprehension and understanding can only be achieved through knowledge, which is acquired and processed by the intellect.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the pivotal role of the intellect in our quest for understanding. It serves as a guide, leading us towards deeper insights and knowledge. Through the intellect, we are able to contemplate the signs of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in the universe, ponder over the verses of the Quran, and reflect upon the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt.
The intellect enables us to discern between truth and falsehood, to critically analyze information, and to make informed decisions. It empowers us to seek knowledge, to question, and to explore the depths of our faith. It is through the intellect that we are able to understand the wisdom behind Allah's commands and the underlying principles of Islam.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, emphasizes the significance of the intellect in this Hadith. He reminds us that the intellect is not only a tool for comprehension but also a calling, a herald that invites us to seek knowledge, to ponder, and to deepen our understanding of the world around us.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the intellect is a divine gift that guides us towards comprehension and understanding. It is through the intellect that we are able to grasp the deeper meanings and concepts of our faith. Let us strive to cultivate our intellects, seek knowledge, and use our reasoning abilities to gain a deeper understanding of Islam and the world we live in. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with wisdom and understanding.
