إِنَّ هذِهِ الْقُلُوبَ تَمَلُّ كَمَا تَمَلُّ الاْبْدَانُ، فَابْتَغُوا لَهَا طَرَائِفَ الْحِكْمَةِ۔

The hearts get weary as bodies get weary; so look for beautiful wise sayings for them (to dispel their weariness).

(Nahj al-Balagha — Peak of Eloquence: Hadith #91)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure family (Ahl al-Bayt), and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The hearts get weary as bodies get weary; so look for beautiful wise sayings for them (to dispel their weariness).

This thought-provoking Hadith highlights the importance of seeking wisdom and knowledge to rejuvenate and nourish our hearts.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (qulub) "قُلُوبَ" refers to the hearts, which are the center of our emotions, thoughts, and spirituality. The word (tamallu) "تَمَلُّ" means to become weary or fatigued. And the phrase (tara'if al-hikmah) "طَرَائِفَ الْحِكْمَةِ" translates to beautiful wise sayings or pearls of wisdom.

To support the exegesis of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 58:

And how many a city have We destroyed that was insolent in its [way of] living, and those are their dwellings which have not been inhabited after them except briefly. And it is We who were the inheritors.

This verse illustrates the weariness and destruction that can befall a city or a community when they deviate from the path of wisdom and righteousness. Just as cities can become weary and desolate, so too can our hearts if we neglect to seek wisdom.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hadid, verse 16, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah and what has come down of the truth?

This verse emphasizes the importance of having humble and submissive hearts, which can only be achieved through the remembrance of Allah and seeking knowledge. When our hearts are weary, it is a sign that we need to turn to Allah and His wisdom to find solace and rejuvenation.

Now, let us reflect on the wise message of this Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, reminds us that just as our bodies become tired and weary, so do our hearts. Our hearts can become burdened with the challenges and trials of life, and it is essential to nourish them with wisdom and knowledge.

By seeking beautiful wise sayings, we can find guidance and inspiration to uplift our hearts. These wise sayings can be found in various forms, such as the Quran, the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (), and the sayings of the Ahl al-Bayt. They serve as a source of comfort, motivation, and enlightenment for our weary hearts.

When we immerse ourselves in the wisdom of Allah's words and the teachings of the Prophet () and his progeny, we find solace and tranquility. These wise sayings provide us with the tools to navigate through the challenges of life, strengthen our faith, and cultivate a deep connection with our Creator.

Moreover, seeking wisdom and knowledge not only rejuvenates our hearts but also has a profound impact on our actions and character. It enables us to make informed decisions, treat others with kindness and compassion, and strive for excellence in all aspects of our lives. The pursuit of wisdom is a lifelong journey that brings us closer to Allah and helps us fulfill our purpose as Muslims.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of seeking wisdom and knowledge to dispel the weariness of our hearts. Just as our bodies require rest and rejuvenation, our hearts need nourishment through beautiful wise sayings. By immersing ourselves in the teachings of the Quran and the Ahl al-Bayt, we can find solace, guidance, and inspiration to navigate through the challenges of life. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with hearts that are constantly seeking wisdom and grant us the ability to apply that wisdom in our lives.
