He whom death overtakes early seeks time while he whose death is deferred...

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Nahj al-Balagha — Peak of Eloquence: Hadith #285)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, and blessings be upon Muhammad () and his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, as well as his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

He whom death overtakes early seeks time while he whose death is deferred puts forth excuses for postponement (of doing good actions).

This impactful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the contrasting attitudes of individuals towards the passage of time and the urgency to perform good deeds.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (mu'ajjal) "مُعَاجَلٍ" refers to someone who seeks to hasten or expedite their actions. On the other hand, (mu'ajjal) "مُؤَجَّلٍ" refers to someone who delays or postpones their actions. The word (al-anẓār) "الاْنْظَارَ" means time or moments, while (taswīf) "التَّسْويفِ" refers to making excuses or justifications.

To further comprehend the meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Munafiqun (63:10),

And spend [in the way of Allah] from what We have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, 'My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be among the righteous.'

This verse echoes the message of the Hadith, emphasizing the urgency of performing good deeds before the arrival of death. It highlights the regret of those who seek more time to engage in acts of charity and righteousness. However, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns that death may come suddenly, leaving no opportunity for repentance or good actions.

Another verse that resonates with the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Ma'arij (70:19-21), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Indeed, mankind was created anxious: When evil touches him, impatient, and when good touches him, withholding [of it]. Except the observers of prayer - Those who are constant in their prayer.

These verses highlight the contrasting attitudes towards time and actions. Some individuals are hasty and anxious, seeking immediate gratification and worldly gains. They are quick to engage in evil deeds and are impatient when faced with adversity. On the other hand, the believers who are constant in their prayers and actions are patient and steadfast, understanding the importance of utilizing time wisely for the sake of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to reflect upon their own attitudes towards time and the performance of good deeds. It urges us to be proactive in seeking opportunities to do good, rather than delaying and making excuses. We should not wait for the perfect moment or for circumstances to be ideal, as death may come unexpectedly, leaving us with regrets.

This Hadith also highlights the importance of self-accountability and self-reflection. We must constantly assess our actions and intentions, ensuring that we are not falling into the trap of procrastination or complacency. By recognizing the fleeting nature of time and the uncertainty of life, we are motivated to seize the present moment and make the most of it for the sake of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to prioritize good actions and not delay them. It urges us to be proactive in seeking opportunities to do good, as death can come suddenly and unexpectedly. By reflecting on the verses of the Quran, we understand the importance of utilizing our time wisely and avoiding the pitfalls of procrastination and excuses. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and motivation to seize every moment and perform righteous deeds.
