(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Brother, The Friend, The Associate And The Companion)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of being kind and courteous to one's companions. The Arabic word (rafiqu) "رَفِقَ" means to be gentle, compassionate, and considerate towards someone. Similarly, (a'nafa) "أعنَفَ" means to be harsh, severe, and unkind. The Hadith states that if one treats their companion with kindness and gentleness, they will gain their acceptance and friendship. On the other hand, if one is harsh and unkind towards their companion, they will drive them away and become separated from them.

This Hadith highlights the significance of maintaining good relationships with others, as it directly affects the bond between individuals. Islam encourages Muslims to be compassionate, understanding, and respectful towards one another. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran:

(Quran 17:70)

And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference.

This verse reminds us of the honor and dignity bestowed upon every human being by Allah. It emphasizes the importance of treating others with kindness and respect, regardless of their social status or background. By being courteous and considerate towards our companions, we uphold the honor and dignity that Allah has granted to us.

Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands us in the Quran to speak to others in a beautiful and kind manner:

(Quran 16:125)

Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of who is [rightly] guided.

This verse teaches us the importance of using gentle and wise words when conveying our thoughts and beliefs to others. By doing so, we are more likely to gain their acceptance and understanding. It also reminds us to avoid harshness and aggression in our interactions, as it can lead to animosity and separation.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge, wisdom, and compassion. He was a role model for Muslims in his conduct and treatment of others. His teachings and actions exemplify the principles of kindness and courtesy towards companions. Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) approach to companionship was based on understanding, empathy, and respect. He would listen attentively to others, offer advice and support, and always strive to maintain harmonious relationships.

The consequences of following the teachings of this Hadith are profound. By being courteous and kind to our companions, we create an environment of love, trust, and unity. Our relationships become stronger, and we are able to build lasting bonds of friendship and brotherhood. On the other hand, if we are harsh and unkind towards our companions, we risk alienating them and causing division within our communities.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to emulate the noble qualities of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in our interactions with others. We should be mindful of our words and actions, always seeking to uplift and support our companions. By doing so, we not only fulfill the teachings of Islam but also contribute to a more harmonious and compassionate society.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to be courteous and kind to our companions, and may He bless us with the ability to build strong and meaningful relationships. Ameen.
