اَلسَّفَهُ يَجْلُبُ الشَّرَّ۔
Dimwittedness attracts evil.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Dimwittedness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "السَّفَهُ يَجْلُبُ الشَّرَّ" which translates to "Dimwittedness attracts evil." Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this thought-provoking saying in light of the Quran.
The word (as-safah) "السَّفَهُ" refers to foolishness or lack of wisdom. It signifies a state of ignorance or intellectual deficiency. This term encompasses a range of qualities such as naivety, imprudence, and lack of discernment. It is important to note that this term does not merely refer to a person's intelligence, but rather to their ability to make wise decisions and exercise sound judgment.
The phrase (yajlubu ash-sharr) "يَجْلُبُ الشَّرَّ" means "attracts evil." It implies that the consequences of foolishness lead to the manifestation of evil in one's life. This can be understood as a cause-and-effect relationship, where the lack of wisdom becomes a catalyst for inviting negative outcomes and harmful consequences.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of wisdom and knowledge, while warning against the perils of ignorance and foolishness.
In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:11-12)
And when it is said to them, 'Do not cause corruption on the earth,' they say, 'We are but reformers.' Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters, but they perceive it not
This verse highlights the consequences of foolishness and ignorance, as those who lack wisdom may unknowingly engage in actions that lead to corruption and evil.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah states, (Quran 49:6)
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful
This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and verifying information before taking any action. It warns against the dangers of acting impulsively or ignorantly, as it may lead to harm and regret.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to seek knowledge, exercise wisdom, and make informed decisions. It cautions against the consequences of foolishness, as it can attract evil and bring about negative outcomes in various aspects of life.
For instance, a person who lacks wisdom may fall into the traps of deception and manipulation, leading to financial losses or damaged relationships. Similarly, a lack of discernment may result in making poor choices that harm one's physical or mental well-being. Furthermore, foolishness can hinder one's spiritual growth and distance them from the path of righteousness.
On the other hand, a person who cultivates wisdom and knowledge will be better equipped to navigate the challenges of life. They will make informed decisions, avoid harmful situations, and seek guidance from the teachings of Islam. By seeking knowledge and applying it in their lives, Muslims can protect themselves from the negative consequences of foolishness and attract goodness and blessings.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to prioritize wisdom and knowledge in their lives. It warns against the perils of foolishness and the consequences it can bring. By seeking knowledge, making informed decisions, and exercising sound judgment, Muslims can protect themselves from evil and attract goodness in all aspects of their lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to make wise choices and protect us from the harms of ignorance.
