— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Contentment And The Contented)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "نِعْمَ الخَليقَةُ القَناعَةُ" which translates to

The best attribute is contentment.

This short but amazing Hadith carries deep wisdom and guidance for Muslims in all aspects of their lives.

Let us first reflect upon the word (khalīqah) "خَليقَةُ", which means attribute or quality. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is emphasizing the importance of possessing certain qualities that are considered praiseworthy and virtuous. These qualities shape our character and define our relationship with Allah and others.

The specific attribute mentioned in this Hadith is (al-qanā'ah) "القَناعَةُ", which is often translated as contentment. Contentment is the state of being satisfied and grateful with what Allah has decreed for us, regardless of our circumstances. It is the opposite of greed, envy, and constant desire for more.

To understand the significance of contentment, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 14:7)

And [recall] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'

This verse highlights the importance of gratitude and contentment. When we are grateful for what we have, Allah promises to increase us in blessings. Contentment allows us to appreciate the blessings bestowed upon us and prevents us from constantly seeking more, which can lead to dissatisfaction and unhappiness.

Furthermore, contentment is closely related to trust in Allah's wisdom and plan for us. In Surah At-Talaq, Allah says, (Quran 65:3)

And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.

This verse reminds us that Allah is the ultimate provider and sustainer. When we are content with what Allah has given us, we place our trust in His divine plan. We understand that He knows what is best for us and that everything happens according to His wisdom and decree.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes contentment as the best attribute because it brings numerous benefits to our lives. Firstly, contentment allows us to find peace and tranquility in our hearts. Instead of constantly chasing after worldly possessions and desires, we find fulfillment in what we already have, leading to inner peace and happiness.

Secondly, contentment protects us from the negative effects of envy and greed. When we are content, we are not consumed by jealousy towards others who may have more than us. We are able to genuinely rejoice in their blessings and maintain healthy relationships based on love and compassion.

Moreover, contentment frees us from the constant pursuit of material possessions and status. It allows us to focus on our spiritual growth and the pursuit of righteousness. When we are content, we are more likely to engage in acts of charity and help those in need, as we recognize the blessings we have been given.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of contentment as the best attribute. It encourages us to be grateful for what Allah has given us and to trust in His divine plan. By cultivating contentment, we can find inner peace, protect ourselves from negative emotions, and focus on our spiritual growth. May Allah grant us the ability to embody this noble attribute and lead lives of contentment and gratitude.
