بِالمَكارِهِ تُنالُ الجَنَّةُ۔
Through discomforts, Paradise is attained.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Hardships)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "بِالمَكارِهِ تُنالُ الجَنَّةُ۔" This can be translated into English as,
Through discomforts, Paradise is attained.
Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. The word (makarihi) "مَكَارِهِ" refers to hardships, difficulties, or things that are disliked. It encompasses all forms of discomfort and challenges that one may face in their life. The word (tunalu) "تُنَالُ" means to attain, achieve, or reach. And finally, (al-Jannah) "الجَنَّةُ" refers to Paradise, the eternal abode of bliss and reward promised by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to the righteous believers.
To understand the enlightening message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Balad, verse 10: (Quran 90:10)
And shown him the two ways? But he has not broken through the difficult pass.
This verse highlights the concept of facing hardships and challenges in order to attain success. It implies that the path to Paradise is not easy, and one must be willing to endure discomforts and overcome obstacles in order to reach it.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Insan, verse 7, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says: (Quran 76:7-9)
They fulfill their vows and fear a Day whose evil will be widespread. And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, [Saying], 'We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.'
This verse emphasizes the importance of performing acts of charity and kindness, even when it may cause discomfort or inconvenience. It teaches us that by sacrificing our own desires and comforts for the sake of Allah, we can attain His pleasure and ultimately, Paradise.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement in this Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to embrace and endure the difficulties that come their way. It encourages us to face challenges head-on, knowing that through perseverance and patience, we can attain the ultimate reward of Paradise.
By willingly accepting discomforts and hardships in this world, we demonstrate our sincerity and devotion to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is through these trials that our faith is tested and strengthened. Just as a person who endures physical training and pushes their limits to achieve a desired goal, a believer who faces and overcomes difficulties for the sake of Allah will be rewarded with the eternal bliss of Paradise.
Moreover, this Hadith reminds us that the path to Paradise is not meant to be easy. It requires sacrifice, self-discipline, and a willingness to step out of our comfort zones. The discomforts we experience in this life, whether they be physical, emotional, or spiritual, serve as opportunities for growth and purification. They remind us of our reliance on Allah and our need for His guidance and mercy.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that through embracing and enduring discomforts, we can attain the ultimate reward of Paradise. It reminds us to face challenges with patience and perseverance, knowing that our struggles in this world are a means of purification and a test of our faith. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and steadfastness to overcome hardships and guide us to the path of Paradise.
