Vain Desire

He who overcomes his vain desire is victorious in attaining the Paradise of the [everlasting] Abode. ظَفِرَ بِجَنَّةِ المَأْوى مَنْ غَلَبَ الهَوى۔ Ghurar al-Hikam غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The delusions of vain desire beguile. غُرُورُ الهَوى يَخْدَعُ۔ Ghurar al-Hikam غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Being overcome by vain desire corrupts [one’s] faith and reason. غَلَبَةُ الهَوى تُفْسِدُ الدّينَ وَالعَقْلَ۔ Ghurar al-Hikam غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Combat vain desire just as an adversary would combat his adversary, and battle it the way an enemy... غالِبِ الهَوى مُغالَبَةَ الخَصْمِ خَصْمَهُ، وحارِبْهُ مُحارَبَةَ العَدُوِّ عَدُوَّهُ لَعَلَّكَ تَمْلِكْهُ۔ Ghurar al-Hikam غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم In succumbing to vain desire there is every [form of] deviation. في طاعَةِ الهَوى كُلُّ الغَوايَةِ۔ Ghurar al-Hikam غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم He who overcomes his vain desire and controls the urges of his [carnal] soul is successful. فازَ مَنْ غَلَبَ هَواهُ، ومَلَكَ دَواعِيَ نَفْسِهِ۔ Ghurar al-Hikam غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Indeed the one who is deceived by the temptations of [his] vain desire has gone astray. قَدْ ضَلَّ مَنِ انْخَدَعَ لِدَواعِى الهَوى۔ Ghurar al-Hikam غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Combat your vain desire with your intellect and you will acquire right guidance. قاتِلْ هَواكَ بِعَقْلِكَ، تَمْلِكْ رُشْدَكَ۔ Ghurar al-Hikam غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Combat your vain desire with your knowledge and your anger with your forbearance. قاتِلْ هَواكَ بِعِلْمِكَ، وغَضَبَكَ بِحِلْمِكَ۔ Ghurar al-Hikam غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Be a conqueror of your vain desire and a seeker of your salvation. كُنْ لِهَواكَ غالِباً، ولِنَجاتِكَ طالِباً۔ Ghurar al-Hikam غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم If vain desire were to be lifted, the insincere person would despise [and feel ashamed of] his... لَوِارْتَفَعَ الهَوى لأَنِفَ غَيْرُ المُخْلصِ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ۔ Ghurar al-Hikam غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One who is controlled by his vain desire goes astray. مَنْ مَلَكَهُ هَواهُ ضَلَّ۔ Ghurar al-Hikam غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Whoever yields to his vain desire is destroyed. مَنْ أطاعَ هَواهُ هَلَكَ۔ Ghurar al-Hikam غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Whoever overcomes his vain desire is honoured. مَنْ يَغْلِبُ هَواهُ يَعِزَّ۔ Ghurar al-Hikam غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Whoever controls his vain desire acquires intelligence [and wisdom]. مَنْ مَلَكَ هَواهُ مَلَكَ النُّهى۔ Ghurar al-Hikam غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Whoever agrees with his vain desire opposes his rectitude [and reason]. مَنْ وافَقَ هَواهُ خالَفَ رُشْدَهُ۔ Ghurar al-Hikam غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One whose vain desire is strong, his resolve becomes weak. مَنْ قَوِيَ هَواهُ ضَعُفَ عَزْمُهُ۔ Ghurar al-Hikam غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Whoever embarks on his vain desire slips. مَنْ رَكِبَ هَواهُ زَلَّ۔ Ghurar al-Hikam غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Whoever follows his vain desire destroys himself. مَنِ اتَّبَعَ هَواهُ أرْدى نَفْسَهُ۔ Ghurar al-Hikam غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Whoever opposes his vain desire has followed [the path of] knowledge. مَنْ خالَفَ هَواهُ أطاعَ الْعِلْمَ۔ Ghurar al-Hikam غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One who proceeds with vain desire falls into destruction. مَنْ جَرى مَعَ الهَوى عَثَرَ بِالرَّدى۔ Ghurar al-Hikam غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم With vain desire there is no [reason and] intellect. لاعَقْلَ مَعَ هَوىً۔ Ghurar al-Hikam غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Whoever embarks on vain desire is afflicted by blindness. مَنْ رَكِبَ الهَوى أدْرَكَ العَمى۔ Ghurar al-Hikam غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم There is no faith with vain desire. لادينَ مَعَ هَوىً۔ Ghurar al-Hikam غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
