Indeed contentment and overcoming lustful desires are from the greatest forms of abstinence.
ألا وإنَّ القَناعَةَ، وغَلَبَةَ الشَّهْوَةِ مِنْ أكْبَرِ العِفافِ۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
The most helpful thing in reforming the self is contentment.
أعْوَنُ شَيْء عَلى صَلاحِ النَّفْسِ القَناعَةُ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Verily in contentment there is prosperity.
إنَّ فِي القُنُوعِ لَغَناءٌ۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Contentment enriches.
اَلْقَناعَةُ تُغْني۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Every contented one is rich.
كُلُّ قانِع غَنِيٌّ۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
One whose contentment increases, his submissiveness [to the people] decreases.
مَنْ كَثُرَ قُنُوعُهُ، قَلَّ خُضُوعُهُ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
One who is content gains honour and becomes independent.
مَنْ قَنِعَ عَزَّ واسْتَغْنى۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
None has more honour than the contented one.
لاأعَزَّ مِنْ قانِع۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Contentment is the symbol of satisfaction [with Allah’s decree].
اَلقُنُوعُ عُنْوانُ الرِّضا۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
The honour of contentment is better than the humiliation of subordination.
عِزُّ القُنُوْعِ خَيْرٌ مِنْ ذُلِّ الخُضُوعِ۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
There is no wealth like contentment.
لاغِنى كَالقُنُوْعِ۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
