— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Etiquette)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

A little good etiquette is better than many noble ancestors.

This thought-provoking Hadith emphasizes the importance of good manners and etiquette in Islam. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith in the light of the Quran.

The word (adab) "أدَبِ" in this Hadith refers to good manners, etiquette, and proper conduct. It encompasses a wide range of behaviors, including respect, kindness, humility, and consideration towards others. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that even a small amount of good etiquette is more valuable than having a prestigious lineage or noble ancestry.

This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the importance of good character and manners. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Qalam (68:4),

And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

This verse highlights the exemplary character of the Prophet Muhammad (), who serves as the ultimate role model for all Muslims.

Furthermore, the Quran encourages believers to exhibit good manners and kindness towards others. In Surah Al-Isra (17:53), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.

This verse emphasizes the importance of speaking with kindness and choosing our words wisely, as it helps to maintain harmony and unity among believers.

The consequences of practicing good etiquette are far-reaching. When we treat others with respect and kindness, we create an atmosphere of love and compassion within our communities. This fosters strong bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood, and it strengthens the overall fabric of society. Moreover, good manners have a positive impact on our own spiritual growth. They purify our hearts and elevate our souls, bringing us closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that having noble ancestors is not sufficient if we do not possess good manners. Our lineage may grant us a certain status in society, but it is our character and conduct that truly define us as individuals. It is through our actions and interactions with others that we leave a lasting impression on the world.

Let us reflect upon this Hadith and strive to embody good etiquette in our daily lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to cultivate good manners and treat others with kindness and respect. May we be among those who are known for their exemplary character and etiquette. And may we be blessed with the company of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this world and the hereafter.
