(Ghurar al-Hikam: Sight, Observation And Insight)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "بِالإسْتِبْصارِ يَحصُلُ الإعتِبارُ۔" This can be translated as,

It is through observation [and reflection] that lessons are learned.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this profound statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of the Quran. The word (istibṣār) "استبصار" in the Hadith refers to the act of observing, contemplating, and reflecting upon the signs and lessons that Allah has placed in the world around us. It is through this process of observation and reflection that true understanding and wisdom are attained.

The Quran emphasizes the importance of observation and reflection in numerous verses. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:190-191),

Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding. Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], 'Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.'

This verse highlights the importance of contemplating the creation of the heavens and the earth as a means of recognizing the wisdom and purpose behind it. By observing the intricate design and balance in the universe, we can gain a deeper understanding of Allah's power and wisdom.

Another verse that supports the concept of observation and reflection is found in Surah Al-Jathiyah (45:13), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And He has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth - all from Him. Indeed, in that are signs for a people who give thought.

This verse reminds us that everything in the heavens and the earth has been made subservient to us by Allah's decree. By observing and reflecting upon the blessings and provisions that Allah has bestowed upon us, we can develop a sense of gratitude and appreciation for His infinite mercy.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith emphasizes the importance of actively engaging in the process of observation and reflection. It is not enough to simply passively witness the signs of Allah's creation; we must actively seek to understand the lessons and wisdom that lie within them.

By observing the natural world, we can learn valuable lessons about the power and majesty of Allah. For example, when we witness the beauty and intricacy of a blooming flower, we are reminded of Allah's creativity and attention to detail. When we observe the cycles of the moon and the changing seasons, we are reminded of the order and precision with which Allah has created the universe.

Furthermore, observation and reflection extend beyond the natural world. We can also learn valuable lessons by observing the actions and behaviors of others. By reflecting on the consequences of their choices, we can gain insight into the importance of making righteous decisions in our own lives.

In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith emphasizes the importance of observation and reflection in acquiring knowledge and understanding. By actively engaging in the process of observing and reflecting upon the signs of Allah's creation, we can gain profound insights and lessons. The Quran supports this concept by highlighting the significance of contemplating the heavens and the earth, as well as the blessings bestowed upon us. May we all strive to be people of observation and reflection, seeking wisdom and guidance from the signs of Allah's creation.
