Keep away from vain hopes, for they take away the delight of the blessings of Allah from you and make them seem small and insignificant, thereby increasing your lack of gratitude.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Hopes And Aspirations)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to avoid vain hopes, as they have negative consequences on our perception of the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The Arabic word (al-munā) "المُنى" refers to vain hopes or false expectations. These are desires and aspirations that are baseless and have no real substance or benefit.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us that indulging in vain hopes takes away the delight and appreciation of the blessings that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has bestowed upon us. When we constantly yearn for what we do not have, we fail to recognize and be grateful for the countless blessings that are already present in our lives. This ingratitude leads to a sense of dissatisfaction and discontentment.
To support this teaching, we can turn to the Quran. In Surah Ibrahim, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 14:7)
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'
This verse emphasizes the importance of gratitude and warns of the consequences of ingratitude. When we fail to appreciate the blessings we have, we risk losing them or having them diminished in our perception.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Insan, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the rewards awaiting the righteous in Paradise. Among these rewards is the absence of vain hopes: (Quran 76:19-22)
There will circulate among them [servant] boys [especially] for them, as if they were pearls well-protected. And they will approach one another, inquiring of each other. And when they are given to drink a cup [of wine] whose mixture is of ginger from a fountain within Paradise named Salsabeel. There will circulate among them [servant] boys [especially] for them, as if they were pearls well-protected.
In Paradise, the believers will be free from the distractions and disappointments of vain hopes, allowing them to fully enjoy the blessings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice serves as a reminder for us to focus on the present and be grateful for what we have been given. By appreciating the blessings in our lives, we can find contentment and joy. This does not mean that we should not strive for improvement or set goals, but rather that we should not allow our desires for what we do not have to overshadow our gratitude for what we do have.
When we constantly chase after vain hopes, we become trapped in a cycle of dissatisfaction and unfulfilled desires. This can lead to a lack of contentment and a constant feeling of inadequacy. By recognizing and appreciating the blessings that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has bestowed upon us, we can break free from this cycle and find peace and fulfillment in our lives.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us to avoid vain hopes and instead focus on gratitude for the blessings we have. By doing so, we can find contentment and joy in our lives, free from the constant pursuit of unattainable desires. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to appreciate His blessings and the strength to be grateful.
