إنّكُمْ إلى اكْتِسابِ الأدَبِ أحوَجُ مِنْكُم إلَى اكْتِسابِ الفِضَّةِ وَالذَّهبِ۔

Indeed you are more in need of acquiring good etiquette than you are of acquiring silver and gold.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Etiquette)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of acquiring good etiquette and manners. The word (iktisab) "اكْتِسَابِ" in Arabic means to acquire or gain, and (adab) "الأدَبِ" refers to good etiquette or manners. This Hadith highlights that the acquisition of good manners is more essential for Muslims than the acquisition of material wealth such as silver and gold.

This wise utterance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) aligns with the teachings of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of good character and manners in various verses. For instance, in Surah Al-Qalam, Allah says, (Quran 68:4)

And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

This verse highlights the elevated character of the Prophet Muhammad () and serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for good manners.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 49:11)

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames.

This verse emphasizes the importance of respecting and treating others with kindness, regardless of their background or gender. It highlights the significance of good etiquette in our interactions with others.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize the development of their character and manners over the accumulation of material wealth. While wealth may bring temporary satisfaction, it is the acquisition of good etiquette that has a lasting impact on our relationships, both with Allah and with fellow human beings.

When we prioritize the acquisition of good manners, we become more compassionate, empathetic, and considerate individuals. Our interactions become filled with kindness, respect, and understanding. We become better listeners, more patient, and more forgiving. These qualities are not only pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), but they also contribute to the harmonious functioning of society.

Acquiring good etiquette also has profound consequences on our spiritual journey. It helps us develop a closer relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) by embodying the Prophetic example. The Prophet Muhammad () was known for his impeccable manners, and by emulating his character, we draw closer to Allah. Additionally, good etiquette enables us to fulfill our obligations towards others, such as fulfilling the rights of our parents, spouses, children, and neighbors. By doing so, we earn the pleasure of Allah and strengthen the bonds of love and unity within the Muslim community.

Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement, we should strive to prioritize the acquisition of good etiquette in our lives. This requires self-reflection, self-discipline, and a conscious effort to improve our character. We should constantly evaluate our actions and strive to rectify any shortcomings in our manners. By doing so, we not only benefit ourselves but also contribute to the betterment of society as a whole.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize the acquisition of good etiquette over material wealth. It aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the importance of good character and manners. By developing our character and embodying the Prophetic example, we draw closer to Allah and contribute to the betterment of society. May Allah grant us the ability to acquire good manners and etiquette and bless us with His mercy and guidance.
