— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of this worldly life in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that one of the signs of the insignificance of this world is that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is not disobeyed anywhere except in it.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the key words and their implications. The word (hawaan) "هَوانِ" refers to the lowliness and insignificance of this worldly life. It emphasizes the fleeting nature of worldly desires and the temporary nature of material possessions. The word (dunya) "دُّنيا" refers to the temporal world, which is transient and perishable.

This Hadith draws our attention to the fact that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has created this world as a test for mankind. It is a place where we are given the freedom to choose between obedience and disobedience. The world, with all its allurements and distractions, serves as a testing ground for our faith and devotion to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Kahf, verse 7: (Quran 18:7)

Indeed, We have made that which is on the earth adornment for it that We may test them [as to] which of them is best in deed.

This verse highlights that the worldly possessions and pleasures are merely a means of adornment and a test for us. They are not the ultimate goal of our existence. The true measure of our worth lies in our righteous actions and deeds. Therefore, we should not be deceived by the temporary allurements of this world, but instead focus on pleasing Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) through obedience.

Another verse that sheds light on the significance of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Imran, verse 185: (Quran 3:185)

Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.

This verse reminds us that death is inevitable and that the true reward for our actions will be given in the Hereafter. The pleasures and attractions of this world are merely illusory and transient. They cannot compare to the eternal bliss and reward that await the believers in Paradise. Therefore, we should not be deceived by the temporary nature of this world and instead focus on preparing for the everlasting life of the Hereafter.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement in this Hadith serves as a reminder for us to prioritize our obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) over the temporary pleasures and distractions of this world. It encourages us to reflect on the consequences of our actions and the ultimate purpose of our existence.

By recognizing the insignificance of this world in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we can strive to align our actions with His commands and seek His pleasure above all else. This Hadith serves as a motivation for us to overcome the temptations and challenges of this world, and to focus on building a strong relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) through sincere worship and obedience.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the fleeting nature of this world and the importance of prioritizing our obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It urges us to reflect on the consequences of our actions and to seek the eternal reward of the Hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to overcome the allurements of this world and to strive for His pleasure.
