Hadith #9319

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the virtue of being sagacious and wise. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, describes the most sagacious person as someone who detests the allure of this worldly life. This person not only detests it, but also cuts off their hopes and aspirations from it, and redirects their desires and expectations away from it.

The word (maqata) "مَقَتَ" means to loathe or detest, indicating a strong aversion towards the materialistic aspects of this world. The word (dunyahu) "دُنْياهُ" refers to this worldly life, encompassing its temporary and fleeting nature.

To support the exegesis of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Hadid (57:20), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children.

This verse emphasizes the transient nature of worldly life and warns against becoming too attached to its materialistic aspects.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran (3:185), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.

This verse reminds us that the true reward and fulfillment lie in the hereafter, not in the temporary pleasures of this world.

Now, let us reflect on the impactful message conveyed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith. The most sagacious person is one who recognizes the fleeting nature of this world and does not become attached to its materialistic allurements. This detachment frees one from the constant pursuit of wealth, status, and worldly possessions, which often lead to anxiety, greed, and dissatisfaction. Instead, one finds solace in the remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the pursuit of spiritual growth.
