— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Evil And The Wicked)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Evil is concealed in everyone’s nature, so if its possessor overcomes it, it remains hidden and if he doesn’t overcome it, it is manifested.

This impactful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the inherent nature of human beings and the struggle between good and evil within each individual.

Let us delve into the important words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (evil) "شَرُّ" refers to anything that is morally wrong or harmful. It encompasses negative thoughts, intentions, and actions. The word (concealed) "كَامِنٌ" indicates that evil is present within every person, regardless of their outward appearance or behavior. It is an inherent part of human nature and can manifest itself in various ways.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further explains that if an individual is able to overcome their evil tendencies, it remains hidden and does not become apparent to others. This highlights the importance of self-control and self-discipline in suppressing negative inclinations. On the other hand, if one fails to overcome their evil nature, it becomes manifested in their actions and behavior, causing harm to themselves and others.

This Hadith finds support in the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us of the constant struggle between good and evil within ourselves. In Surah Yusuf, Allah says, (12:53)

Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy

This verse acknowledges the inherent inclination towards evil within the human soul, but also emphasizes that those who receive Allah's mercy are able to overcome it.

Another verse that supports the concept of hidden evil within human nature is found in Surah Al-Qiyamah, where Allah says, (75:2-6)

No! I swear by the reproaching soul. Does man think that We will not assemble his bones? Yes, We are able [even] to proportion his fingertips. But man desires to continue in sin. He asks, 'When is the Day of Resurrection?'

This passage highlights the inner struggle of the soul, which desires to continue in sin despite the knowledge of the Day of Resurrection.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to be vigilant in recognizing and overcoming their own evil tendencies. It encourages self-reflection and self-improvement, as well as the cultivation of virtuous qualities. By acknowledging the presence of hidden evil within ourselves, we can strive to purify our hearts and minds, and ultimately become better individuals.

The consequences of failing to overcome one's evil nature are far-reaching. It can lead to the deterioration of one's character, strained relationships, and a negative impact on society as a whole. Conversely, those who are able to conquer their inner demons and manifest goodness in their actions become a source of inspiration and guidance for others.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder of the constant struggle between good and evil within every individual. It emphasizes the importance of self-control and self-discipline in overcoming one's evil tendencies. By reflecting on this Hadith and seeking guidance from the Quran, Muslims can strive to purify their hearts and minds, and become a force for good in the world. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to overcome our inner evil and manifest goodness in our lives.
