Hadith #1439

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

لا سَوْأَةَ أسْوَأُ مِنَ الشُّحِّ۔

This translates to,

There is no evil trait worse than avarice.

In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the grave nature of greed and avarice, emphasizing its detrimental effects on an individual and society as a whole.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. "لا سَوْأَةَ" refers to "no evil trait" or "no worse trait." "أسْوَأُ" means "worse" or "more evil." And finally, "الشُّحِّ" translates to "avarice" or "greed."

And let not those who [greedily] withhold what Allah has given them of His bounty ever think that it is better for them. Rather, it is worse for them. Their necks will be encircled by what they withheld on the Day of Resurrection.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Humazah (104:1-3), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) condemns those who amass wealth and become engrossed in their material possessions, stating,

Woe to every scorner and mocker, who collects wealth and [continuously] counts it. He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal.

This verse highlights the delusion of those who believe that their wealth will bring them eternal happiness and security, neglecting the true purpose of life and the importance of using wealth for the betterment of society.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims of the dangers of avarice and the importance of cultivating contentment and generosity. Greed blinds individuals to the needs of others and fosters a self-centered mindset that hinders the progress and unity of society. And do not consume one another's wealth unjustly or send it [in bribery] to the rulers in order that [they might aid] you [to] consume a portion of the wealth of the people in sin, while you know [it is unlawful].

This verse emphasizes the importance of conducting business and acquiring wealth through lawful means, without resorting to dishonesty or exploitation.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) thought-provoking saying serves as a call to Muslims to reflect on their own actions and attitudes towards wealth. It urges us to prioritize the well-being of others over our own desires for material possessions.
