(Ghurar al-Hikam: Keeping Promises And Fulfilling Pledges)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The bane of covenants is lack of care [in fulfilling them].

This profound statement highlights the importance of fulfilling our commitments and obligations. To better understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words used.

The word (bane) "آفَةُ" refers to something that causes harm, destruction, or ruin. It signifies the negative consequences that arise from neglecting our responsibilities. In this context, it refers to the harmful effects that result from not fulfilling our covenants.

The term (covenants) "العُهُودِ" encompasses various types of agreements, promises, and contracts that we make with others. It includes both formal and informal commitments, whether they are between individuals, communities, or nations. These covenants can be related to personal relationships, business transactions, or societal obligations.

The phrase (lack of care) "قِلَّةُ الرِّعايَةِ" emphasizes the importance of being diligent and attentive in fulfilling our covenants. It highlights the negative consequences that arise when we neglect or disregard our responsibilities towards others. It implies a lack of concern, negligence, or indifference towards the trust placed upon us.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of fulfilling our commitments and covenants. In Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:1), Allah says,

O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.

This verse serves as a general reminder to fulfill all types of agreements and contracts.

Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands us to fulfill our covenants even if they are with non-Muslims. In Surah Al-Anfal (8:72), Allah says,

Indeed, those who believed and those who were Jews or Christians or Sabeans [before Prophet Muhammad] - those [among them] who believed in Allah and the Last Day and did righteousness - will have their reward with their Lord, and no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.

This verse highlights the importance of fulfilling our commitments regardless of the religious or cultural background of the other party.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder that neglecting our responsibilities and failing to fulfill our covenants can have severe consequences. It can lead to broken relationships, loss of trust, and societal discord. Moreover, it can have spiritual implications, as it goes against the teachings of Islam and the principles of justice and fairness.

By fulfilling our covenants, we not only uphold our moral and ethical obligations but also contribute to the well-being and harmony of society. It fosters trust, strengthens relationships, and promotes justice. It reflects the noble character of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who was known for his unwavering commitment to justice and fulfilling his responsibilities.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of fulfilling our covenants and responsibilities. It serves as a call to action, urging us to be diligent and attentive in fulfilling our commitments. By doing so, we not only uphold the teachings of Islam but also contribute to the betterment of society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to fulfill our covenants and obligations with care and sincerity.
