لا يُؤْنِسَنَّكَ إلاّ الحَقُّ، ولا يُوحِشَنَّكَ إلاّ الباطِلُ۔
Let nothing make you feel at ease but the truth and let nothing make you uneasy except falsehood.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Truth)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is a enlightening Hadith that emphasizes the importance of seeking and adhering to the truth, while rejecting falsehood. Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding of its message.
The word (unisa) "أُنِسَ" in Arabic refers to a state of comfort, tranquility, or ease. It is derived from the root word (nassa) "نَسَّ", which means to feel at ease or to find solace. In this context, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is advising us that we should not allow anything to bring us comfort or solace except for the truth.
On the other hand, the word (yuhisha) "يُوحِشَ" in Arabic means to feel uneasy, disturbed, or unsettled. It is derived from the root word (wahisha) "وَحِشَ", which means to feel lonely or isolated. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is cautioning us that falsehood should be the only thing that makes us feel uneasy or unsettled.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking and adhering to the truth, while warning against the consequences of falsehood.
In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:42)
And mix not truth with falsehood, nor conceal the truth while you know (it).
This verse highlights the importance of distinguishing between truth and falsehood, and not compromising or concealing the truth for any reason.
In Surah Al-Hajj, Allah says, (Quran 22:62)
That is because Allah is the Truth, and that which they call upon besides Him is falsehood, and that Allah is the Most High, the Grand.
This verse emphasizes that Allah is the ultimate truth, and anything besides Him is falsehood. It reminds us to place our trust and reliance solely on Allah, and not to be deceived by false beliefs or idols.
The consequences of adhering to the truth and rejecting falsehood are profound. By seeking and upholding the truth, we align ourselves with the divine guidance and attain spiritual enlightenment. Allah says in Surah Al-Ma'idah, (Quran 47:7)
O you who have believed, if you support Allah, He will support you and plant firmly your feet.
This verse assures us that when we stand firmly for the truth, Allah will support us and grant us strength.
Conversely, embracing falsehood leads to spiritual darkness and deviation from the right path. In Surah Yunus, Allah says, (Quran 10:2)
And when the truth came to them, they said, 'This is magic, and indeed we are, concerning it, disbelievers.'
This verse highlights the rejection of truth by those who are engulfed in falsehood, leading them to disbelief and denial.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, advises us to prioritize the pursuit of truth and to be vigilant against falsehood. By doing so, we align ourselves with the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of Allah. We must constantly evaluate our beliefs, actions, and choices to ensure they are in accordance with the truth.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for all Muslims to seek the truth and reject falsehood. It urges us to be discerning and vigilant in our pursuit of knowledge and understanding. By adhering to the truth and rejecting falsehood, we align ourselves with the divine guidance and attain spiritual enlightenment. May Allah guide us all to the truth and grant us the wisdom to recognize and reject falsehood.
