In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

بِوُفُورِ العَقْلِ يَتَوَفَّرُ الحِلْمُ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of intellect in cultivating forbearance. To understand this Hadith in depth, let us analyze the key words and their meanings.

The word (aql) "عَقْلِ" refers to intellect or wisdom. It is the faculty of reasoning, understanding, and discernment. It is through the proper utilization of intellect that one can attain knowledge and make sound judgments. In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of abundant intellect.

The word (hilm) "حِلْمُ" translates to forbearance or patience. It refers to the ability to remain calm and composed in the face of adversity, to control one's anger, and to exercise restraint. When a person possesses a strong intellect, they are able to understand the consequences of their actions, think rationally, and exercise self-control. This enables them to respond to challenging situations with patience and wisdom.

For example, imagine a person who faces a provocation or insult. If they possess abundant intellect, they will be able to analyze the situation objectively, consider the potential consequences of their response, and choose a course of action that is wise and patient. They will not allow their emotions to overpower their intellect, but rather, they will exercise forbearance and respond in a manner that promotes peace and harmony.

Conversely, a person lacking in intellect may react impulsively, responding to provocation with anger and aggression. They may engage in harmful actions that only escalate the situation and lead to negative consequences. This highlights the importance of intellect in cultivating forbearance and making wise choices.

In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith teaches us that through abundant intellect, forbearance becomes abundant.
