Hadith #634

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Al-Ikhwanu zīnatun fī ar-rakhā'i wa 'uddatun fī al-balā'i.

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of brotherhood among Muslims, highlighting its significance during both times of ease and times of difficulty.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith by analyzing its key words. The term "Ikhwan" refers to brothers, indicating the bond of unity and love that exists among Muslims. It signifies the sense of belonging and support that is inherent in the Islamic community. The word "zīnah" means embellishment or adornment, suggesting that brothers are a source of beauty and enrichment in times of ease. Furthermore, the word "rakhā'" refers to ease or prosperity, signifying the times when life is smooth and abundant. During such periods, brothers stand as a source of support and strength, enriching the experience of prosperity by sharing in each other's happiness and success. They provide emotional support, encouragement, and a sense of belonging, making the journey of life more fulfilling.

On the other hand, the term "uddah" means support or assistance, highlighting the role of brothers in times of tribulation or adversity. When faced with challenges, trials, or hardships, brothers come together to provide solace, guidance, and practical help. They offer a shoulder to lean on, a listening ear, and a helping hand, alleviating the burdens and difficulties faced by their fellow Muslims.

The Quranic verses provide further insight into the importance of brotherhood and support among Muslims. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.

This verse emphasizes the unity and brotherhood that should exist among Muslims, urging them to resolve conflicts and disputes in a just and fair manner. It highlights the importance of maintaining strong bonds of brotherhood, as it leads to the attainment of Allah's mercy.

Another verse, Surah Al-Taubah (9:71), states,

The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. Those - Allah will have mercy upon them. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.

This verse emphasizes the mutual support and cooperation that should exist among believers. It encourages Muslims to enjoin good, forbid evil, and fulfill their religious obligations together, reinforcing the concept of brotherhood and unity.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the Quranic verses, we understand that brotherhood among Muslims is not limited to mere social interaction or superficial relationships. It is a deep bond of love, support, and unity that transcends individual differences and extends to all aspects of life. Brothers uplift one another in times of ease, bringing joy and enrichment to their lives. They also stand as pillars of support in times of tribulation, offering comfort and assistance.
