(Ghurar al-Hikam: Remembrance [Of Allah] And The Reminder)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

دَوامُ الذِّكْرِ يُنيرُ القَلْبَ والفِكْرَ۔

This can be translated as,

Constant remembrance [of Allah] illuminates the heart and mind.

Let us delve into the essence of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (dhikr) "ذِكْر" in Arabic refers to the remembrance of Allah. It encompasses various acts such as reciting the Quran, praising Allah, seeking His forgiveness, and reflecting upon His attributes and teachings. The word (dawam) "دَوامُ" means constancy or continuity. Therefore, the Hadith emphasizes the importance of consistently engaging in the remembrance of Allah.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that highlight the significance of remembrance and its impact on the heart and mind. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ra'd (13:28),

Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah, hearts are assured.

This verse emphasizes that the remembrance of Allah brings tranquility and assurance to the hearts of believers. When we constantly remember Allah, our hearts are filled with His love, mercy, and guidance. This remembrance acts as a source of comfort and solace, dispelling any doubts or anxieties that may plague our minds.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:45), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do.

This verse highlights that the remembrance of Allah is even more significant than prayer in preventing us from engaging in immoral and wrongful actions.

When we engage in constant remembrance of Allah, it serves as a shield against evil inclinations and temptations. It strengthens our resolve to uphold righteousness and avoid sinful behavior. The remembrance of Allah acts as a guiding light, illuminating our path and enabling us to make choices that are pleasing to Him.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the transformative power of constant remembrance. When we immerse ourselves in the remembrance of Allah, our hearts and minds become enlightened. Our hearts are filled with the light of faith, love, and gratitude towards Allah. This light dispels the darkness of ignorance, doubt, and negativity, allowing us to see the world through the lens of truth and righteousness.

Moreover, constant remembrance of Allah enhances our intellectual faculties. It sharpens our minds, enabling us to think critically, make sound judgments, and seek knowledge. The remembrance of Allah opens our minds to profound insights and wisdom, enabling us to navigate the complexities of life with clarity and purpose.

The consequences of neglecting the remembrance of Allah are grave. When we distance ourselves from the remembrance of Allah, our hearts and minds become susceptible to the influence of worldly distractions and desires. We become disconnected from our spiritual essence, leading to a sense of emptiness and dissatisfaction. Our minds become clouded with confusion, and we may fall into the traps of ignorance and misguided ideologies.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of constant remembrance of Allah. Through the remembrance of Allah, our hearts and minds are illuminated, bringing peace, tranquility, and clarity into our lives. Let us strive to engage in the remembrance of Allah consistently, for it is through this remembrance that we find solace, guidance, and enlightenment. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to remember Him constantly and benefit from the blessings of His remembrance.
