إيّاكَ والخُرْقَ، فَإنَّهُ شَيْنُ الأخلاقِ۔
Be cautious of ineptness for it is disgraces [one’s] character.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Ineptness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
إيّاكَ والخُرْقَ، فَإنَّهُ شَيْنُ الأخلاقِ۔
This can be translated as,
Be cautious of ineptness for it is disgraces [one’s] character.
Now, let us delve into the deeper meaning of this impactful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and explore its significance in the light of the Quran.
The word (khorq) "خُرْقَ" in this Hadith refers to ineptness or incompetence. It signifies a lack of skill, knowledge, or ability in performing a task or fulfilling a responsibility. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns Muslims to be cautious of this trait, as it brings disgrace to one's character.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of knowledge and competence in various verses. For example, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah says,
O you who have believed, when you are told, 'Make room in assemblies,' then make room; Allah will make room for you. And when you are told, 'Arise,' then arise; Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
This verse highlights the significance of knowledge and competence in the context of social interactions. It implies that those who possess knowledge and competence are elevated in the sight of Allah. Conversely, those who lack these qualities may find themselves in a state of ineptness, which can lead to disgrace.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah says,
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking Allah's guidance and support in all our endeavors. By doing so, we can acquire the necessary knowledge and competence to excel in our actions and avoid falling into a state of ineptness.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns Muslims about the consequences of ineptness. When one lacks the required knowledge or skill to fulfill their responsibilities, it not only affects their own character but also impacts their relationships with others. Ineptness can lead to mistakes, misunderstandings, and even harm to oneself and others.
For instance, imagine a person who lacks knowledge and skill in financial matters. They may make poor investment decisions, leading to financial losses and hardships for themselves and their family. This ineptness not only affects their own character but also tarnishes their reputation and credibility in the eyes of others.
Similarly, in the realm of religious knowledge, a person who lacks understanding and expertise may misinterpret the teachings of Islam, leading to misguided beliefs and actions. This can have severe consequences not only for themselves but also for the wider Muslim community.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice serves as a reminder for Muslims to continuously seek knowledge and strive for competence in all aspects of life. By doing so, we can avoid falling into a state of ineptness and uphold our character and integrity.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns Muslims to be cautious of ineptness as it brings disgrace to one's character. This advice aligns with the Quranic emphasis on knowledge and competence. By seeking knowledge, acquiring skills, and striving for excellence, we can avoid the pitfalls of ineptness and uphold our character as Muslims. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and ability to continuously seek knowledge and competence in all aspects of our lives.
