أيْنَ المُلُوكُ والأكاسِرَةُ؟!
Where are the kings and Khosraus?.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Taking Lessons And Examples)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states: "أيْنَ المُلُوكُ والأكاسِرَةُ؟!" which translates to
Where are the kings and Khosraus?
This statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) carries deep meaning and significance, and it can be understood and analyzed in the light of the Quran.
The word (mulook) "مُلُوكُ" refers to kings or rulers, while (Akasirah) "أكاسِرَةُ" refers specifically to the Persian kings, particularly Khosrau. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is questioning the whereabouts and fate of these powerful rulers, highlighting their transient nature and reminding us of the ultimate authority and power of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
This Hadith resonates with the Quranic teachings that emphasize the temporary nature of worldly power and the ultimate sovereignty of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Allah reminds us in Surah Al-Mulk (Chapter 67), Verse 1:
Blessed is He in whose hand is the dominion, and He is over all things competent.
This verse affirms that all power and authority ultimately belong to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and He is the ultimate ruler of the universe.
Furthermore, the Quran teaches us in Surah Al-Imran (Chapter 3), Verse 26:
Say, 'O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honor whom You will and You humble whom You will. In Your hand is [all] good. Indeed, You are over all things competent.'
This verse emphasizes that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the ultimate bestower of power and authority, and He can grant it to whomever He chooses and take it away from whomever He wills.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) question serves as a reminder to Muslims that worldly power and authority are transient and fleeting. The kings and rulers who once held immense power and influence will eventually fade away, while the true authority lies with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) alone.
This Hadith also highlights the humility and detachment from worldly power that Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed. Despite being the rightful successor of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and possessing immense knowledge and wisdom, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) did not seek worldly power or become attached to it. Instead, he focused on serving Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the Muslim community, embodying the true spirit of leadership and selflessness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) "أيْنَ المُلُوكُ والأكاسِرَةُ؟!" serves as a powerful reminder to Muslims of the transient nature of worldly power and the ultimate authority of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It encourages us to focus on seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) rather than being attached to temporary positions of authority. May we all strive to emulate the humility and wisdom of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and seek the eternal rewards of the Hereafter.
