(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he states,

This world is smaller, more lowly and more insignificant than for one to keep grudges in [and because of] it.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this statement and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word (asghar) "أصْغَرُ" in the Hadith refers to the smallness or insignificance of this world. It emphasizes the fleeting nature and transitory status of worldly possessions and desires. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in the Quran, (Quran 57:20)

Know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, pomp and mutual boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children.

This verse highlights the temporary nature of worldly pursuits and the need to prioritize the eternal life hereafter.

The word (ahqar) "أحْقَرُ" in the Hadith means more lowly or contemptible. It draws our attention to the insignificance of holding grudges and harboring animosity in this world. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises us in the Quran, (Quran 5:8)

And let not the hatred of others make you avoid justice. Be just: that is nearer to piety.

This verse encourages Muslims to rise above personal grievances and to prioritize justice and fairness in their interactions with others.

The word (anzar) "أنْزَرُ" in the Hadith refers to the insignificance or pettiness of holding grudges in this world. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in the Quran, (Quran 16:126)

And if you punish [an enemy, O believers], punish with an equivalent of that with which you were harmed. But if you are patient - it is better for those who are patient.

This verse encourages Muslims to respond to harm or injustice with patience and forgiveness, rather than perpetuating a cycle of grudges and revenge.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the insignificance of holding grudges in this world because it distracts us from our ultimate purpose and diverts our attention from the path of righteousness. The pursuit of worldly desires and the nurturing of grudges can consume our hearts and minds, preventing us from attaining spiritual growth and inner peace.

By emphasizing the smallness, lowliness, and insignificance of this world, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges Muslims to prioritize forgiveness, compassion, and unity. He encourages us to rise above personal disputes and to focus on the greater goals of seeking Allah's pleasure and building a harmonious society.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the temporary nature of this world and the insignificance of holding grudges within it. It calls upon us to prioritize forgiveness, justice, and unity, as these are the qualities that lead to spiritual growth and a meaningful existence. May we all strive to embody these teachings and seek Allah's pleasure in all aspects of our lives.
