Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he states,

The self-admiration of a person is proof of his deficiency and a symbol of his weak intellect.

Let us delve into the meaning and implications of this statement in light of the Quran.

The Arabic word (i'jab) "إعْجابُ" used in this Hadith refers to self-admiration or being impressed with oneself. It is a state where an individual becomes excessively proud of their own abilities, qualities, or achievements. This self-admiration is seen as a negative trait because it blinds a person to their own shortcomings and prevents them from recognizing their weaknesses.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that this self-admiration is (burhanu naqsihi) "برْهانُ نَقْصِهِ", which can be translated as proof of one's deficiency. This means that when a person is excessively impressed with themselves, it is an indication that they lack certain qualities or abilities. It is a manifestation of their shortcomings and imperfections.

Furthermore, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes self-admiration as (unwanu da'fi 'aqlihi) "عُنْوانُ ضَعْفِ عَقْلِهِ", which can be translated as a symbol of weak intellect. This implies that self-admiration is not only a sign of deficiency but also reflects a lack of wisdom and understanding. It shows that a person's intellect is not strong enough to recognize their own limitations and faults.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us against arrogance and self-admiration in several verses. In Surah Al-Hadid, Allah says, (57:20)

And know that your properties and your children are but a trial and that Allah has with Him a great reward

This verse reminds us that our worldly possessions and achievements are merely a test from Allah, and we should not become arrogant or self-conceited because of them.

In Surah Al-Qasas, Allah narrates the story of Qarun, who was blessed with immense wealth and resources. However, his self-admiration and arrogance led to his downfall. Allah says, (28:81)

So We caused the earth to swallow him and his home. And there was for him no company to aid him other than Allah, nor was he of those who [could] defend themselves

This serves as a warning that self-admiration can lead to a person's destruction and isolation.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Isra, Allah reminds us of the fleeting nature of worldly possessions and the importance of humility. Allah says, (17:72)

And do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [some] categories of them, [its being but] the splendor of worldly life by which We test them. And the provision of your Lord is better and more enduring

This verse emphasizes that true success lies in seeking the provision of Allah and not in being impressed by worldly achievements.

The exegesis of this Hadith highlights the importance of humility and self-awareness in the life of a Muslim. It teaches us that excessive self-admiration is a sign of deficiency and weak intellect. Instead, we should strive to recognize our weaknesses and constantly seek improvement. By acknowledging our limitations, we can develop a sense of humility and turn to Allah for guidance and support.

This Hadith also serves as a reminder that true success lies in seeking the pleasure of Allah and not in worldly accomplishments. It encourages us to focus on developing our character, knowledge, and understanding, rather than being impressed by our own abilities. By doing so, we can cultivate a sense of humility and constantly strive for self-improvement.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us against self-admiration and highlights its negative consequences. It teaches us the importance of humility, self-awareness, and seeking improvement. By recognizing our own deficiencies and weaknesses, we can strive to become better individuals and seek the pleasure of Allah. May Allah guide us all on the path of humility and grant us the wisdom to recognize our own shortcomings.
