Put all your effort and endeavour in gaining salvation from the place of wretchedness and punishment and deliverance from the place of tribulation and chastisement.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of striving for salvation and deliverance from the hardships and punishments of this world and the hereafter. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this impactful saying in light of the Quran.
The word (your effort) "هَمِّكَ" in the Hadith refers to the concerns and worries that occupy our minds and hearts. It signifies the importance of directing our efforts towards seeking salvation and deliverance from the miseries and punishments of this world and the hereafter. This implies that our primary focus should be on attaining spiritual growth, righteousness, and closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in the Quran, (Quran 3:133)
And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous
This verse emphasizes the urgency of seeking forgiveness and striving for righteousness in order to attain the ultimate reward of Paradise. It further reinforces the message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith, urging us to prioritize our efforts towards salvation.
The word (salvation) "خَلاصِ" in the Hadith refers to liberation from the state of wretchedness and punishment. It implies freeing oneself from the clutches of sins, vices, and the consequences they bring. This liberation can only be achieved through sincere repentance, seeking forgiveness, and striving to lead a righteous life.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in the Quran, (Quran 18:107)
Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds - they will have the Gardens of Paradise as a lodging
This verse highlights the correlation between belief, righteous actions, and the reward of Paradise. It emphasizes the importance of striving for salvation by aligning our beliefs with righteous deeds.
The word (place) "مَحَلِّ" in the Hadith refers to the state or position of wretchedness and punishment. It signifies the consequences of our actions and the potential hardships we may face as a result. By directing our efforts towards salvation, we aim to escape the negative consequences of our sins and transgressions.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in the Quran, (Quran 20:124)
And whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed life
This verse highlights the correlation between turning away from the remembrance of Allah and a life filled with distress and misery. It serves as a reminder that neglecting our spiritual well-being can lead to a state of wretchedness and punishment.
The word (deliverance) "نَّجَاةِ" in the Hadith refers to being saved from the trials, tribulations, and chastisements that we may encounter in this world and the hereafter. It signifies the protection and mercy of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) upon those who strive for righteousness and seek His guidance.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) assures us in the Quran, (Quran 2:155)
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient
This verse reminds us that trials and tribulations are a part of life, but those who remain patient and steadfast will be granted deliverance and reward.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to prioritize their efforts towards seeking salvation and deliverance. It urges us to redirect our concerns and worries towards attaining spiritual growth, righteousness, and closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By doing so, we can liberate ourselves from the state of wretchedness and punishment and find protection from the trials and tribulations of this world and the hereafter.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to heed the advice of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive for salvation and deliverance. May He guide us on the path of righteousness and grant us success in this world and the hereafter.
