— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
العلم كنز عظيم لايفنى
which translates to
Knowledge is a great treasure that does not get exhausted.
This impactful Hadith emphasizes the immense value and everlasting nature of knowledge.
Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. (knowledge) "العلم" refers to the understanding and awareness of facts, principles, and truths. It encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. (treasure) "كنز" signifies something of great worth and significance, often hidden or concealed. It implies that knowledge is a precious asset, comparable to a hidden treasure that holds immeasurable value. (does not get exhausted) "لا يفنى" indicates that knowledge is boundless and limitless, it does not diminish or fade away.
The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance and value of knowledge. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9),
Are those who know equal to those who do not know? Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who do not. It emphasizes that knowledge is a means of remembrance and understanding, elevating those who possess it.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good. And none will remember except those of understanding.
This verse highlights that wisdom, which is derived from knowledge, is a gift from Allah. It is a source of immense goodness and is only comprehended by those who possess understanding.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the everlasting nature of knowledge. It is not a finite resource that can be depleted or exhausted. Instead, knowledge is an eternal treasure that continues to expand and grow. The pursuit of knowledge is a lifelong journey that brings numerous benefits to individuals and society as a whole.
When we reflect upon this Hadith, we realize that knowledge is not merely an accumulation of facts, but a transformative force that shapes our thoughts, actions, and character. It empowers us to make informed decisions, seek the truth, and contribute positively to our communities. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, exemplified the importance of seeking knowledge throughout his life. His deep understanding of religious teachings, jurisprudence, and various fields of knowledge made him a beacon of guidance for Muslims. His knowledge was not limited to theoretical understanding but was also accompanied by practical application, as he implemented his wisdom in governance, justice, and leadership.
As Muslims, we are encouraged to seek knowledge in all its forms, whether it be religious, scientific, or intellectual. The pursuit of knowledge is a religious obligation, as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11),
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
This verse highlights that knowledge is a means of elevation and honor in the sight of Allah.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder of the immense value and everlasting nature of knowledge. It encourages us to continuously seek knowledge, expand our understanding, and apply it in our lives.
