Do not take advice from one who has lost his senses and do not trust one who has an ignoble background, for indeed the one who has lost his senses deceives while he thinks he is offering good advice, and one who has an ignoble background corrupts while he thinks he is rectifying.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Sincere Advice)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of seeking advice from individuals who possess sound judgment and integrity. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims not to take advice from those who have lost their senses, as their impaired judgment may lead to misguided counsel. Similarly, he advises against trusting individuals with an ignoble background, as their corrupt nature may hinder their ability to offer genuine guidance.

To understand the depth and significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of some key words. The word (aql) "عَقْلُ" refers to intellect or sound judgment, while (asl) "أصْلُ" refers to one's lineage or background. The word (yansah) "يَنْصَحُ" means to offer sincere advice, and (yufsidu) "يُفْسِدُ" means to corrupt or cause harm.

The Quran provides us with guidance that supports the wisdom behind Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.

This verse highlights the importance of verifying the credibility and integrity of the source before accepting advice or information.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:36), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.

This verse reminds us to seek knowledge and understanding before accepting advice, as blindly following the counsel of someone who lacks wisdom can lead to detrimental consequences.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious and discerning when seeking guidance. Taking advice from someone who has lost their senses can lead to disastrous outcomes, as their impaired judgment may cause them to offer advice that is harmful or misguided. Similarly, trusting individuals with an ignoble background can be detrimental, as their corrupt nature may hinder their ability to offer sincere and beneficial counsel.

For example, imagine a person who has lost their senses due to intoxication. Their impaired judgment may lead them to offer advice that is irrational or harmful. If one were to blindly follow such advice, it could result in negative consequences and regret.

Likewise, someone with an ignoble background, such as a person known for dishonesty or deceit, may not have the moral integrity to provide sincere and trustworthy guidance. Their corrupt nature may lead them to manipulate situations or offer advice that serves their own interests rather than genuinely helping others.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice also highlights the importance of introspection and self-awareness. It reminds us to evaluate our own judgment and integrity before offering advice to others. We should strive to cultivate sound judgment and maintain noble character, ensuring that our counsel is sincere and beneficial.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a valuable reminder for Muslims to seek advice from individuals with sound judgment and integrity. It cautions against blindly following the counsel of those who have lost their senses or have an ignoble background. By adhering to this advice, we can safeguard ourselves from misguided guidance and ensure that the advice we seek and offer is sincere, beneficial, and in accordance with the teachings of Islam. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to discern between genuine advice and misleading counsel.
