Hadith #6162

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Do not be haughty with the one whom you have not enslaved.

This impactful Hadith highlights the importance of humility and the prohibition of arrogance towards others. To fully comprehend the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words.

The word (istatil) "استطل" in Arabic means to be haughty or proud. It refers to an attitude of superiority and looking down upon others. The word (la tastariq) "لاتسترق" means to enslave or subjugate someone. It implies exerting control and dominance over another individual.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) thought-provoking Hadith draws our attention to the fact that we should not display arrogance or treat others with contempt unless we have authority or control over them. It is a reminder to maintain humility and respect towards all individuals, regardless of their social status or position.

This teaching of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) finds support in the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of humility and warns against arrogance. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah says,

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them.

This verse reminds us that we should not mock or belittle others, as they may possess qualities and virtues that are superior to our own. It teaches us to refrain from arrogance and to treat others with kindness and respect.

Furthermore, in Surah Luqman (31:18), Allah says,

And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.

This verse highlights the disapproval of Allah towards those who display arrogance and pride. It serves as a reminder that true success lies in humility and modesty, rather than in looking down upon others.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also sheds light on the consequences of arrogance. When we treat others with contempt and arrogance, we create divisions and animosity within society. It hinders the establishment of harmonious relationships and fosters a sense of superiority, which is contrary to the teachings of Islam.

Reflecting upon this Hadith, we are reminded of the exemplary character of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). Known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, he embodied the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).
