Hadith #3371

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الخَوْفُ اِسْتِظْهارٌ۔" which translates to

Fear [of Allah] is a backing.

Let us delve into the essence of this statement in light of the Quran.

The word (khawf) "خَوْفُ" in Arabic refers to fear or awe. It is a sentiment that arises within a person when they perceive a threat or danger. In the context of this Hadith, it refers to the fear of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), which is a fundamental aspect of faith for Muslims. This fear is not a paralyzing terror, but rather a reverential awe and consciousness of Allah's presence and power.

The word (istidhhar) "اِسْتِظْهارٌ۔" is derived from the root (zahara) "ظَهَرَ", which means to support or back someone. In this Hadith, it signifies that the fear of Allah serves as a backing or support for a believer. It is a source of strength and protection, guiding them towards righteousness and deterring them from sin.

The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the significance of fearing Allah and its positive impact on an individual's life. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (2:197)

And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (fear of Allah). So fear Me, O you of understanding.

This verse highlights that the fear of Allah is the ultimate provision for a believer, enabling them to navigate the challenges of life with wisdom and understanding.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (3:102)

So fear Allah as much as you are able and listen and obey and spend [in the way of Allah]; it is better for your selves. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.

This verse emphasizes that the fear of Allah is not limited to a specific level or extent, but rather it should be practiced to the best of one's ability. It is through this fear that one can attain success in this life and the hereafter.

The exegesis of this Hadith reveals the profound wisdom behind Imam Ali's statement. The fear of Allah acts as a backing for a believer, providing them with strength, guidance, and protection. When a person truly fears Allah, they become conscious of His presence in every aspect of their life. This fear motivates them to strive for righteousness, avoid sinful actions, and fulfill their obligations towards Allah and His creation.

The fear of Allah also serves as a deterrent against wrongdoing. When a believer is aware of the consequences of their actions and the accountability they will face on the Day of Judgment, they are less likely to engage in sinful behavior. This fear acts as a safeguard, preventing them from falling into the traps of temptation and leading a life of disobedience.

Moreover, the fear of Allah instills humility and gratitude within a believer. They recognize their own weaknesses and shortcomings, realizing that their success and blessings are solely from Allah. This fear helps them maintain a sense of humility and gratitude towards their Creator, leading to a life of gratitude, contentment, and servitude.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the fear of Allah is not a weakness, but rather a source of strength and support for a believer. It is through this fear that one can attain true success in this life and the hereafter. By being conscious of Allah's presence, striving for righteousness, and avoiding sinful actions, a believer can lead a life that is pleasing to Allah and beneficial to themselves and society. May Allah grant us the ability to fear Him sincerely and may this fear serve as a guiding light in our lives.
