(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Noble -Minded And Munificent)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he expresses his preference for acquiring knowledge of a noble-minded person over acquiring material possessions such as an expensive and precious jewel. Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith and explore its meaning in light of the Quran.

The word (iqtibatan) "اِغْتِباطاً" in the Hadith refers to a strong desire or preference. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is emphasizing his intense desire to gain knowledge of a noble-minded person. This highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and recognizing the value of virtuous individuals in our lives.

The phrase (bi-ma'rifati al-karim) "بِمَعْرِفَةِ الكَريمِ" refers to the act of knowing or recognizing a noble-minded person. This knowledge goes beyond mere acquaintance; it implies understanding and appreciating the qualities and virtues of such individuals. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) values this knowledge above all else, as it has a profound impact on one's character and spiritual growth.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of knowledge and the value of virtuous individuals in various verses.

In Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah says,

O you who have believed, when you are told, 'Space yourselves' in assemblies, then make space; Allah will make space for you. And when you are told, 'Arise,' then arise; Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do.

This verse highlights the elevated status of those who possess knowledge and emphasizes the importance of recognizing and respecting them. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) recognizes the immense value of such individuals and expresses his preference for acquiring knowledge from them.

In Surah Al-Qasas (28:14), Allah narrates the story of Prophet Musa (Moses) and describes him as a noble-minded person. Allah says,

And when he reached his full strength and was [mentally] mature, We bestowed upon him judgment and knowledge. And thus do We reward the doers of good.

This verse highlights the connection between knowledge and nobility of character. Prophet Musa (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was granted knowledge by Allah, which contributed to his noble character and enabled him to fulfill his mission. Similarly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) values the knowledge of noble-minded individuals as it has a transformative effect on one's own character.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) preference for acquiring knowledge from noble-minded individuals over material possessions is a reflection of his deep understanding and wisdom. He recognizes that true wealth lies in the acquisition of knowledge and the development of virtuous character. By seeking knowledge from noble-minded individuals, one can gain valuable insights, guidance, and inspiration that can shape their own character and contribute to their spiritual growth.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) words serve as a reminder for all Muslims to prioritize the acquisition of knowledge and the company of virtuous individuals. It is through this pursuit that we can enhance our understanding of Islam, strengthen our faith, and strive towards becoming noble-minded individuals ourselves.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to seek knowledge from noble-minded individuals and to embody their virtues in our own lives. May we always prioritize the pursuit of knowledge and the development of virtuous character. Ameen.
