Disagreement is the motive for wars.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Disagreement)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Disagreement is the motive for wars.

Let us delve into the significance of this statement and explore its implications in light of the Quran.

The word (khulfu) "خُلْفُ" in Arabic refers to disagreement or discord. It signifies a state where people hold conflicting opinions or have opposing viewpoints. This disagreement can arise in various aspects of life, such as politics, religion, or personal matters. It is this discord that Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights as the root cause of wars.

To understand the significance of this statement, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Anfal, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 8:46)

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

This verse emphasizes the importance of unity and discourages disputes among Muslims. It warns against the negative consequences of discord, which can lead to a loss of strength and courage. When Muslims are divided, their collective power weakens, making them vulnerable to external threats.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) also states, (Quran 3:103)

And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.

This verse encourages Muslims to unite and hold onto the teachings of Allah, avoiding division and discord. Unity is the key to strength and success, while division leads to weakness and vulnerability.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the destructive nature of disagreement. When people are unable to find common ground or resolve their differences peacefully, conflicts escalate and can eventually lead to wars. History has shown us numerous examples where wars have erupted due to disagreements between nations, tribes, or even within communities.

It is essential for Muslims to reflect on this Hadith and strive for unity and harmony within the Ummah. By avoiding unnecessary disputes and working towards resolving conflicts through peaceful means, we can prevent the escalation of disagreements into wars. This requires patience, understanding, and a willingness to listen to different perspectives.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom. His statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize unity and to seek peaceful resolutions to conflicts. By doing so, we can uphold the teachings of the Quran and emulate the noble example set by the Prophet Muhammad () and his Ahl al-Bayt.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the destructive consequences of disagreement and discord. It urges Muslims to strive for unity, avoid unnecessary disputes, and seek peaceful resolutions to conflicts. By doing so, we can maintain the strength and integrity of the Ummah and prevent the outbreak of wars. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to follow the path of unity and peace.
