Hadith #729

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ آخى في الدُّنيا حُرِمَ۔

This can be translated as,

One who fraternizes for the sake of this world is deprived [of it].

To understand the depth and wisdom behind this statement, let us delve into the meanings of the key words and phrases.

The word (akha) "آخى" in this Hadith refers to forming a close bond or brotherhood with someone. It implies a deep connection and loyalty towards another individual. However, it is important to note that the context here is specifically related to worldly matters. The phrase (fi al-dunya) "في الدُّنيا" emphasizes that this brotherhood is based on worldly interests and gains, rather than for the sake of Allah or for the betterment of one's faith.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us that such a relationship, built solely on worldly desires, will ultimately lead to deprivation. This deprivation is not limited to material possessions, but also includes the deprivation of spiritual growth, inner peace, and the blessings of the Hereafter. By prioritizing worldly gains over the pursuit of righteousness and the pleasure of Allah, one risks losing the true purpose of their existence.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 86,

These are the people who have bought the life of this world at the price of the Hereafter, so their punishment will not be lightened, nor will they be helped.

This verse highlights the consequences of prioritizing worldly gains over the eternal rewards of the Hereafter. Those who focus solely on worldly pursuits will face the consequences of their choices, both in this life and in the Hereafter.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Kahf, verse 46, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us,

Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.

This verse emphasizes the temporary nature of worldly possessions and relationships. While they may bring temporary pleasure and adornment to our lives, they should not distract us from the pursuit of enduring good deeds and the ultimate reward from Allah.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of these Quranic verses, we understand that forming relationships solely for worldly gains is a futile endeavor. Such relationships may bring temporary benefits, but they ultimately lead to deprivation and loss. Instead, we should prioritize forming bonds based on faith, righteousness, and the pursuit of the Hereafter. By doing so, we ensure that our relationships are rooted in the pleasure of Allah and the betterment of our souls.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, reminds us of the importance of seeking meaningful connections that transcend the boundaries of this transient world. Let us reflect upon his teachings and strive to build relationships that are based on the principles of Islam, seeking the pleasure of Allah and the eternal rewards of the Hereafter.
