عَلَيْكَ بِالإحْسانِ فَإنَّهُ أفْضَلُ زِراعَة وأرْبَحُ بِضاعَة۔
Espouse kindness, for it is the best cultivation and the most profitable merchandise.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Espouse kindness, for it is the best cultivation and the most profitable merchandise.
This thought-provoking saying emphasizes the importance of kindness and its immense benefits in both this world and the hereafter.
The word (ihsan) "إحْسان" in Arabic, which is translated as "kindness" in English, encompasses various meanings. It refers to performing good deeds with excellence, sincerity, and perfection. It involves going beyond the minimum requirements and treating others with utmost compassion, generosity, and benevolence.
The Hadith compares kindness to two significant concepts: cultivation and merchandise. Cultivation refers to the act of planting and nurturing crops, while merchandise refers to goods or commodities that are bought and sold for profit. By using these analogies, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the transformative power and immense value of kindness.
To further understand the significance of kindness, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:195),
And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse emphasizes the importance of performing acts of kindness and highlights that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) loves those who engage in such actions.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Isra (17:23), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], 'uff,' and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.
This verse highlights the importance of kindness towards parents, emphasizing that even a noble word can have a significant impact.
Kindness is not limited to specific relationships but extends to all aspects of our lives. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:2),
And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.
This verse encourages Muslims to work together in acts of righteousness, which inherently involve kindness towards one another.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder that kindness is not only a virtuous act but also a means of personal growth and benefit. When we treat others with kindness, we create an atmosphere of love, compassion, and harmony. This, in turn, fosters strong relationships, builds trust, and promotes a sense of community among Muslims.
Furthermore, kindness has a ripple effect. When we extend kindness to others, they are more likely to reciprocate and spread kindness to others as well. This creates a chain reaction of goodness, ultimately leading to a more compassionate society.
Moreover, kindness has profound spiritual implications. It is a means of purifying our hearts and seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said,
Kindness is a mark of faith, and whoever is not kind has no faith.
This Hadith highlights the inseparable connection between kindness and faith, emphasizing that true believers are characterized by their acts of kindness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of kindness as the best cultivation and the most profitable merchandise. Kindness holds immense value in both this world and the hereafter. It is a means of personal growth, fostering strong relationships, and creating a more compassionate society. By embodying kindness in our actions, we not only fulfill our duty as Muslims but also seek the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and follow in the footsteps of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his noble Ahl al-Bayt. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to espouse kindness in all aspects of our lives.
