إذا ائْتَمَنْتَ فَلا تَسْتَخِنْ۔
When you entrust anyone [with something], then do not accuse them of treachery.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Trustworthiness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
When you entrust anyone [with something], then do not accuse them of treachery.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of trust and warns against accusing others without valid evidence. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (idha) "إذا" in the Hadith means "when" or "whenever." It signifies that the guidance provided by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is applicable in all situations when we entrust someone with a responsibility or task. The word (aitamanta) "ائْتَمَنْتَ" comes from the root word (aman) "أمن", which means trust or entrustment. It implies that when we place our trust in someone, we should not doubt their loyalty or accuse them of betrayal.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the importance of trustworthiness and warns against suspicion and false accusations. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12),
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
This verse highlights the sinfulness of making negative assumptions about others and the prohibition of spying or backbiting. It encourages Muslims to have a positive mindset and to avoid unjustly accusing others. Accusing someone without evidence is akin to consuming the flesh of a dead brother, which is repulsive and detestable.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands,
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of verifying information before passing judgment or accusing others. It reminds Muslims to be cautious and not to harm others based on false or incomplete information.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) guidance in the Hadith encourages Muslims to uphold the principles of justice, fairness, and trustworthiness. When we entrust someone with a responsibility, it is essential to have faith in their abilities and integrity. Accusing them without valid evidence not only damages their reputation but also undermines the foundation of trust within society.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed unparalleled knowledge and wisdom, which enabled him to provide such profound guidance. His own life serves as a shining example of trustworthiness and loyalty. He was known as the gate of knowledge and the epitome of justice. Muslims, both Shia and Sunni, hold him in high regard for his unwavering commitment to the principles of Islam.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of trust and warns against accusing others without valid evidence. It aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the sinfulness of negative assumptions and false accusations. As Muslims, we should strive to uphold the principles of justice, fairness, and trustworthiness in all our interactions, just as Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) exemplified throughout his life. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to follow the guidance of the Quran and the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
