— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Brother, The Friend, The Associate And The Companion)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

عِندَ زَوَالِ الْقُدْرَةِ يَتَبَيَّنُ الصَّدِيقُ مِنَ الْعَدُوِّ

which translates to

It is when power is lost that friend is distinguished from foe.

This profound statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the true nature of individuals and their loyalty during times of adversity and weakness.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us delve into the key words used. The word (qudrah) "قُدْرَةِ" refers to power, ability, or strength. It signifies the capability of an individual to exert influence, control, or authority. The word (sadiq) "صَدِيقُ" means a true friend, someone who is loyal, trustworthy, and sincere. On the other hand, the word (aduww) "عَدُوِّ" refers to an enemy, someone who opposes, harms, or undermines.

The Hadith emphasizes that it is during the time when one loses their power or authority that the true nature of individuals is revealed. In times of strength and influence, it is often easy to find people who claim to be friends, allies, or supporters. However, when faced with adversity or weakness, the true friends are distinguished from the foes. This Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims that true loyalty and friendship are tested during difficult times.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that support the message of this Hadith. In Surah Al-Anfal (8:27), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, do not betray Allah and the Messenger or betray your trusts while you know [the consequence].

This verse highlights the importance of loyalty and trustworthiness, especially towards Allah and His Messenger. It reminds Muslims to remain steadfast in their faith and not to betray their commitments, even during challenging circumstances.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mumtahanah (60:8), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

This verse encourages Muslims to maintain justice and fairness towards those who do not oppose or harm them. It teaches us that true righteousness is displayed by treating others with kindness and justice, regardless of their beliefs or actions.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the supporting Quranic verses, we understand that true friendship and loyalty are not based on superficial factors such as power or authority. Rather, they are tested and proven during times of weakness and adversity. A true friend remains steadfast and supportive, while an enemy may exploit the vulnerability of others.

This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to evaluate their relationships and assess the sincerity and loyalty of those around them. It urges us to be discerning and cautious, especially during challenging times when our power or influence may be diminished. Muslims should strive to be true friends, standing by one another in times of need, and displaying loyalty and support regardless of the circumstances.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that true friendship and loyalty are revealed when power is lost. It reminds us to be cautious and discerning in our relationships, and to strive for sincerity and loyalty in our interactions with others. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to be true friends and grant us the strength to remain steadfast in times of difficulty.
