(Ghurar al-Hikam: Admonition)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "بِالمَواعِظِ تَنْجَلِى الغَفْلَةُ۔" This can be translated as,

Through admonitions heedlessness is dispelled.

Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (mawa'izh) "مَواعِظِ" refers to admonitions or reminders that are meant to awaken and enlighten the hearts of individuals. These admonitions serve as a means to awaken people from their state of heedlessness and bring them closer to the remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). They are a powerful tool to dispel the darkness of ignorance and negligence.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of admonitions in the Quran. In Surah Al-Anfal, verse 45, Allah says,

O you who have believed, when you encounter a company [from the enemy forces], stand firm and remember Allah much that you may be successful.

This verse highlights the significance of remembering Allah in times of difficulty and challenges. Admonitions serve as a means to remind us of our purpose and the need to seek Allah's guidance and support.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Jumu'ah, verse 9, Allah states,

O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.

This verse highlights the importance of leaving worldly pursuits and engaging in the remembrance of Allah during the Friday prayer. Admonitions play a crucial role in redirecting our focus towards the remembrance of Allah and away from worldly distractions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that through these admonitions, the state of heedlessness is dispelled. Heedlessness, or (al-ghaflah) "الغَفْلَةُ", refers to a state of forgetfulness and negligence towards our spiritual duties and responsibilities. It is a state where we become oblivious to the remembrance of Allah and the pursuit of righteousness.

When we are immersed in the affairs of this world, we often forget our ultimate purpose and the importance of seeking Allah's pleasure. Admonitions serve as a wake-up call, shaking us out of our state of heedlessness and reminding us of our duties towards Allah and our fellow human beings.

For example, when we hear a sermon or a reminder about the importance of prayer, it serves as an admonition that awakens our consciousness and reminds us of the significance of establishing a connection with Allah through prayer. Similarly, when we listen to a lecture or read a book about the virtues of patience, it serves as an admonition that encourages us to be patient in times of difficulty and tribulation.

The consequences of heedlessness are grave. It leads to a spiritual decline, distancing us from Allah and causing us to lose sight of our purpose in life. However, through the power of admonitions, we can break free from this state of heedlessness and embark on a path of spiritual growth and enlightenment.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we realize the importance of seeking out admonitions and reminders in our lives. We should actively engage in listening to sermons, attending religious gatherings, and reading books that remind us of our duties towards Allah and our fellow human beings. By doing so, we can dispel the darkness of heedlessness and strive towards a state of constant remembrance of Allah.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that through admonitions, heedlessness is dispelled. Admonitions serve as a powerful tool to awaken our hearts, remind us of our purpose, and bring us closer to Allah. Let us strive to seek out these admonitions and incorporate them into our lives, so that we may be guided on the path of righteousness and success. May Allah grant us the ability to benefit from admonitions and protect us from the state of heedlessness.
