Hadith #3435

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

اِسْتَخِرْ ولا تَتَخَيَّرْ، فَكَمْ مَنْ تَخَيَّرَ أمْراً كانَ هَلاكُهُ فيهِ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of seeking guidance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) through istikhara, rather than relying solely on our own desires and preferences.

The word (istikhara) "اِسْتَخِرْ" comes from the root word (khayr) "خَيْر", which means "goodness" or "what is best." Istikhara is a form of seeking Allah's guidance in making decisions. It involves performing a specific prayer and supplication, asking Allah to guide us towards what is best for us in this life and the hereafter.

On the other hand, the word (tatkhayyar) "تَتَخَيَّرْ" comes from the root word (khayr) "خَيْر" as well, but with the prefix (tata) "تَتَ", which indicates the reflexive form of the verb. It means to "choose" or "decide" based on one's own desires and preferences without seeking divine guidance.

The Hadith warns us against relying solely on our own choices and preferences because it highlights the potential dangers and negative consequences that can arise from such decisions. It reminds us that our limited knowledge and understanding may lead us astray, whereas Allah's guidance is perfect and encompasses all aspects of our lives.

To further understand the significance of seeking Allah's guidance and the dangers of relying solely on our own choices, let us turn to the Quran for guidance.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:216):

But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you know not.

This verse emphasizes that what we may perceive as good or bad may not align with Allah's divine wisdom. Therefore, it is crucial to seek His guidance and trust His knowledge in all matters.

In Surah Ash-Shura (42:30), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

And it is not for any human being that Allah should speak to him except by revelation or from behind a partition or that He sends a messenger to reveal, by His permission, what He wills. Indeed, He is Most High and Wise.

This verse highlights the importance of seeking guidance from Allah through His chosen messengers and revelations. It reminds us that Allah's wisdom surpasses our limited understanding, and His guidance is essential for making sound decisions.

The consequences of relying solely on our own choices without seeking Allah's guidance are evident throughout history and in our daily lives. Many individuals have made decisions based on their desires and preferences, only to face disastrous outcomes. These outcomes can manifest in various forms, such as financial loss, broken relationships, or spiritual decline.

For example, someone may choose a career solely based on financial gain, ignoring their true passions and talents. As a result, they may find themselves unhappy and unfulfilled in their chosen profession, leading to a sense of emptiness and dissatisfaction.

Similarly, in matters of marriage, someone may choose a partner based on superficial qualities or societal expectations, without considering compatibility and shared values. This can lead to a strained and unhappy marriage, causing emotional turmoil for both individuals involved.

In contrast, when we seek Allah's guidance through istikhara, we open ourselves to His infinite wisdom and mercy. By surrendering our desires and preferences to His will, we align ourselves with His divine plan for us. Istikhara allows us to make decisions with a clear mind and a heart that is receptive to Allah's guidance.

It is important to note that seeking Allah's guidance through istikhara does not mean we abandon our intellect or free will. Rather, it is a means of seeking His blessings and assistance in making the best decision for our lives. We still need to gather information, weigh the pros and cons, and consult with trusted individuals. Istikhara serves as a spiritual compass, guiding us towards what is best for our worldly and spiritual well-being.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of seeking Allah's guidance through istikhara, rather than relying solely on our own desires and preferences. It cautions us against the potential dangers and negative consequences that can arise from making decisions without divine guidance. By surrendering our choices to Allah and seeking His wisdom, we align ourselves with His divine plan and pave the way for a more fulfilling and successful life. May Allah guide us all in making decisions that are pleasing to Him and beneficial for our worldly and spiritual journey.
