(Ghurar al-Hikam: Well-Being)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Well-being is the better of the two attires.

This beautiful Hadith emphasizes the importance of good health and well-being in our lives. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word (afa'iyyah) "عافِيَةُ" in the Hadith refers to well-being, soundness, or good health. It encompasses physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of a person's life. It is a state of being free from illness, afflictions, and hardships. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the superiority of well-being over any material attire or possession.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of well-being in the Quran. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (2:195)

And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.

This verse encourages us to spend in the way of Allah and do good deeds, which ultimately contribute to our well-being.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah, Allah says, (5:87)

O you who have believed, do not prohibit the good things which Allah has made lawful to you and do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like transgressors.

This verse reminds us not to prohibit or deprive ourselves of the good things that Allah has made permissible for us. By enjoying the lawful pleasures of life, we can maintain our well-being and avoid unnecessary hardships.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of well-being because it is the foundation upon which we can fulfill our duties and responsibilities as Muslims. When we are in good health, both physically and mentally, we are better equipped to worship Allah, serve others, and contribute positively to society.

Moreover, well-being has a profound impact on our spiritual journey. When we are physically and mentally healthy, we are more likely to engage in acts of worship, such as prayer, fasting, and charity. These acts of worship strengthen our connection with Allah and increase our spiritual well-being.

Conversely, when we neglect our well-being, it can have detrimental effects on our lives. Poor health can hinder our ability to fulfill our obligations and hinder our spiritual growth. It can lead to physical and mental exhaustion, making it difficult to focus on our worship and fulfill our duties as Muslims.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for us to prioritize our well-being. It encourages us to take care of our physical, mental, and spiritual health. By doing so, we can lead fulfilling lives and fulfill our duties as Muslims effectively.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of well-being in our lives. It reminds us that good health is a precious gift from Allah and should be cherished and maintained. By prioritizing our well-being, we can lead productive lives, fulfill our obligations, and grow spiritually. May Allah grant us all good health and well-being.
