Hadith #199

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الْخِلاَفُ يَهْدِمُ الرَّأْيَ۔" This Hadith can be translated as,

Opposition destroys good counsel.

Let us delve into the essence of this statement in light of the Quran.

The word (al-khilafu) "الْخِلاَفُ" in this Hadith refers to opposition or disagreement. It signifies a state of conflict or discord between individuals or groups. The word (yahdimu) "يَهْدِمُ" means to destroy or undermine, while (ar-ra'i) "الرَّأْيَ" refers to good counsel or sound advice.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of unity and harmony among Muslims. In Surah Al-Imran (3:103), Allah says,

And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.

This verse highlights the significance of unity and discourages division among believers. When there is opposition and discord, it becomes difficult to maintain the unity and strength of the community.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:46), Allah reminds the believers,

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart.

This verse emphasizes the detrimental effects of disputes and disagreements. It warns against the loss of courage and strength that result from internal conflicts within the Muslim community.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith sheds light on the destructive nature of opposition when it comes to good counsel. When people are divided and engage in constant disagreement, it becomes challenging to reach a consensus or make informed decisions.
