(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Brother, The Friend, The Associate And The Companion)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), the Lord of all worlds, and blessings be upon Muhammad (ﷺ), his family, his companions, and the righteous ones who followed in their footsteps.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
It is from weak personal judgment to break ties with one’s brothers.
This Hadith highlights the importance of maintaining strong bonds of brotherhood and unity among Muslims.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith by examining the key words and their implications. The word (ajz) "عَجْزِ" refers to weakness or incapacity, specifically in the context of personal judgment. It implies a deficiency in one's ability to make sound decisions or exercise wisdom. The term (ra'i) "رِّأيِ" refers to personal opinion or judgment. It signifies the subjective assessment made by an individual based on their understanding and perspective. Lastly, (istifsad) "إسْتِفْسادُ" means corruption or disruption. It denotes the negative consequences that arise from weak personal judgment.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of unity and brotherhood among Muslims. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10), Allah says,
The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers.
This verse highlights the obligation to reconcile and resolve conflicts among fellow believers, emphasizing the importance of maintaining harmonious relationships.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:46), Allah instructs the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) to
consult them in the matter.
This verse emphasizes the significance of seeking counsel and considering the opinions of others in decision-making processes. It encourages the practice of collective wisdom and the avoidance of unilateral judgments.
Now, let us reflect on the wise message conveyed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith. Breaking ties with one's brothers is a manifestation of weak personal judgment because it disregards the principles of unity, compassion, and forgiveness that Islam promotes. It is a decision made without considering the potential consequences and the long-term impact on the individual and the community.
When we sever ties with our fellow Muslims, we create divisions and disharmony within the Ummah. This weakens our collective strength and hinders our ability to face challenges and achieve progress. It is through unity and cooperation that we can overcome difficulties and work towards the betterment of society.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, reminds us of the importance of maintaining strong bonds of brotherhood. He encourages us to exercise sound judgment by prioritizing unity and forgiveness over personal grievances. By doing so, we uphold the teachings of the Quran and the example set by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his noble companions.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize unity and maintain strong ties of brotherhood. It cautions against weak personal judgment that leads to the disruption of these bonds. By reflecting on the Quranic verses that emphasize unity and consultation, we understand the significance of this Hadith in guiding our actions and decisions. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to uphold the principles of brotherhood and unity in our lives.
