(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

أكْرِمْ نَفْسَكَ ما أعانَتْكَ عَلى طاعَةِ اللّهِ۔

This beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of honoring oneself as long as it aids in the obedience of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. (Ikrim) "أكْرِمْ" means to honor or dignify. It implies treating oneself with respect and recognizing the value of one's own soul. (Nafsak) "نَفْسَكَ" refers to one's own self or soul. It encompasses our physical, emotional, and spiritual being. (Ma) "ما" means as long as or as much as. (A'anatka) "أعانَتْكَ" comes from the root word (Awn) "عَوْن", which means to aid or assist. It signifies the support or assistance that our soul provides us. Finally, (Ala) "عَلى" means upon or on, and (Ta'atillah) "طاعَةِ اللّهِ" refers to the obedience of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 185:

Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship.

This verse highlights the mercy and compassion of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) towards His creation. It is a reminder that Islam is a religion of ease, and Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) does not burden us beyond our capabilities.

When Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to honor ourselves as long as it aids us in the obedience of Allah, he is emphasizing the importance of self-care and self-respect within the boundaries of Islam. It is essential to recognize our own worth and take care of our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. By doing so, we are better equipped to fulfill our obligations towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

However, it is crucial to understand that this honor and self-care should not be pursued at the expense of disobeying Allah's commands. Our obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) should always take precedence over our personal desires and inclinations. As Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Imran, verse 102:

O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages us to strike a balance between honoring ourselves and fulfilling our obligations to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This balance can be achieved by aligning our actions and intentions with the teachings of Islam. For example, taking care of our physical health through exercise and proper nutrition is a form of self-honor, as long as it does not lead us to neglect our religious duties such as prayer or fasting.

Similarly, nurturing our emotional well-being by seeking knowledge, engaging in positive relationships, and practicing gratitude is a way of honoring ourselves, as long as it does not lead us to engage in sinful behavior or indulge in excessive worldly pursuits.

Furthermore, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that our soul is a divine gift from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is through our soul that we have the capacity to worship and obey Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Therefore, we should cherish and value our soul by utilizing it in acts of obedience and worship.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of honoring ourselves within the boundaries of Islam. It reminds us to take care of our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being, as long as it aids us in the obedience of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By striking a balance between self-care and fulfilling our religious obligations, we can lead a life that is pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and beneficial to ourselves and others. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to understand and implement this valuable lesson in our lives.
