(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "خَيْرُ النُّفُوسِ أزْكاها۔" This can be translated as,
The best souls are the purest among them.
In this enlightening Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of purity in one's soul.
The word (khayr) "خَيْرُ" in the Hadith refers to goodness, excellence, or the best. It signifies the highest level of moral and spiritual qualities that a person can possess. It encompasses righteousness, piety, and virtuous behavior. The word (nufus) "نُّفُوسِ" refers to souls or individuals. It represents the innermost essence of a person, including their thoughts, intentions, and character. Lastly, the word (azkaha) "أزْكاها" means the purest or the most purified. It emphasizes the importance of purifying one's soul from impurities and negative traits.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Shams (91:9-10), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
He has succeeded who purifies it, and he has failed who instills it [with corruption].
This verse highlights the importance of purifying one's soul. Success lies in purifying the soul from vices, sins, and impurities, while failure is associated with corrupting the soul with evil deeds and negative traits.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf (7:179), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And We have certainly created man and We know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein.
This verse emphasizes that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is fully aware of the innermost thoughts and intentions of every individual. It highlights the importance of purifying one's soul, as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is intimately aware of our inner struggles and desires.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that the best souls are those that are pure and free from impurities. A pure soul is one that is cleansed from sins, negative traits, and harmful intentions. It is a soul that is filled with goodness, righteousness, and piety. Such a soul is a reflection of the divine attributes and is pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Purifying our souls requires self-reflection, self-discipline, and constant striving towards righteousness. It involves seeking forgiveness for our sins, repenting sincerely, and actively working to improve our character. It also entails cultivating positive traits such as kindness, patience, generosity, and humility.
The consequences of purifying our souls are immense. A pure soul enables us to establish a strong connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and attain His pleasure. It allows us to navigate the challenges of life with wisdom, patience, and resilience. A pure soul also influences our interactions with others, as it radiates positivity, compassion, and empathy.
Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of purifying our souls and striving for excellence in our character. It serves as a guiding principle for Muslims, regardless of their sect or school of thought. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to purify our souls and become among the best of His servants.
